Is there a way to be notified if a specific vendor posts? Or some other way to avoid missing public events with private vendors?

Unfortunately, you can't subscribe to individual users but you can subscribe to threads. There is also a feature to subscribe to forums and be alerted of new posts, but that is disabled at the moment since it was causing a pretty major posting bug.

Most vendors have newsletters and email alerts you can sign up for though, which would probably be the best way to be alerted of their sales.
