Trouble Focusing on Text

Post by SpankMyFrank »

Hey, I'm wondering if anyone has experienced this. I'm unsure as of yet if this is a side effect of the kratom or if its just coincidentally happened to me after a burn so far. I did a bit of searching on vision effects, but I didn't find much other than blurry vision and that doesn't exactly for the bill.

I have been doing quite a bit of reading on my Kindle during this quarantine mess and I particularly enjoy reading after a nice dose of kratom. Every now and then, I'm having trouble focusing properly on the book. All of the sudden, the entire page will go out of focus, beside for the word or two that I'm reading at that moment. It's very disorienting/discomforting and I find that I can't really refocus without taking my eyes off the page for a minute. When it does happen, it happens repeatedly, and I have to put down the book for a number of hours before giving it another shot.

What's strange to me is that it doesn't seem to affect my vision in any other capacity, other than reading this Kindle. I can even read text on my phone just fine, watch TV, etc, but when I go back to the Kindle things start blurring.

Anyway, I'm trying to figure out if this is something other people have experienced as a side effect, or if there may be something else going on with my vision. I appreciate any input.

Hmm I have certainly experienced the "eye wobbles" from a bad batch and it made it impossible for me to read. I could mitigate it a little bit if I stared at something straight but if I had to move my eyes side to side or up and down like with reading, I would be incredibly uncomfortable. This sounds somewhat similar to what you are experiencing, except in my case I felt like using my phone or watching TV were also greatly affected. Do you get this same effect regardless of the strain/vendor?

Right now I'm only rotating two vendors, BB and TFH, but it's happening with both of them and multiple batches. With the BB leaf it seems to only happen on higher servings 6-7g, and I've noticed it with lower servings 3-4g with TFH leaf. It's worth mentioning that before I acquired the leaf from BB & TFH, most of my experience was with what most people here would consider subpar leaf.

I've read a lot about the wobbles but from what I can gather I don't think that's it. I've never actually experienced the wobbles myself.

Okay, you may be experiencing something other than the wobbles. The only time I experienced nystagmus was from some crappy gas station kratom. Nowadays, most of my stock is from BB and I've never had any eye problems. Though I rarely dose above 4gs. Could it be that you are experiencing digital eye strain? You did say you are doing more reading than usual. Obviously your phone and tv aren't an issue but maybe the kindle is a bit more demanding on the eyes? I wonder if the problem would still persist if you switched to reading a regular book instead of a kindle?

My suggestion is lowering your serving size. Most people experience "wobbles" if the serving size is too high. I've heard a wide range of ways that people experience wobbles, so I don't think it can be defined by one single symptom. For example, i get terribly dizzy while looking up when I have wobbles, but for many people that's not a thing they experience.

If you experience these at even low serving sizes, I would partner with a medical professional for advice.

It's one of the Kindles without a back light so it's very similar to the text on a page of a book. Thanks though, I could probably due for less screen time regardless.

Do you experience wobbles in a similar fashion?

Do you think 3 or 4 gram serving size could be considered a high dose? I've always considered it to be on the low end for me, but like I said, I've only been dealing with higher quality leaf as of lately. I've been hesitant to go lower because in the past lower servings have been near imperceptible.

I do experience exactly what you're describing when I've either dosed too high, or dosed too soon after my previous dose. It's like your body can only absorb so much mitra or whatever at one time.

Usually it's not that bad, but in the past it has gotten to the point where it can a little hard to focus on small text. If that happens, I know I took too much and wait a good 10+ hours to take anymore, and then only a little. Definitely space your doses out as much as possible, for me 6 hours is good.

OP aka SMF,

Whites can do this and especially if you’re dehydrated.

I drink water at least 3 bottles and 2 Gatorade G2’s a day.
I do physical work for a living so I’m constantly moving and need to be constantly hydrating. The summertime is a B!tch tho can be a lot of work pissing 15 x a day! :x

(My Point behind this) was that you might be less likely to experience this issue with ‘trouble focusing’* if you were more hydrated? Even still it could just be a batch thing or a particular “burn” too.

Wow, thanks for the responses. I never really knew people used wobbles to describe symptoms other than nystagmus, something which I've never experienced. I always wait at least 6 hours before taking more, and I am constantly downing water on days that I take kratom. I will consider that I may be taking too much kratom at a time and try to taper down my serving size.

It really comforts me to know that a few of you have experienced the exact same thing. I was really hoping it was just the kratom and not my eyes starting to give out.

This sounds like a great idea! I poked around a bit before I made this thread but I couldn't find anything exactly like what I was experiencing.

Easy... Stop abusing kratom, stop taking double or triple servings. BB and most good vendors, a normal Serving = 3g. TFH recommends 2g, its right there on the label. Supplement Facts! :P

Hah... Right. I'm a kratom abuser, you caught me. You should know by now that it's not an exact science and some people require more than others. I'm far from "abusing" the leaf but thanks anyway

Is that a thing around here? Not exactly the welcome committee I was hoping for when I signed up. I'd wager that a lot of people who use kratom wouldn't take very kindly to being called abusers. Everyone else who posted managed to tell me more or less the same thing without resorting to name-calling. I've had a lot of weak kratom that requires much higher of a dose to get anything out of. Without knowing the alkaloid level in each batch I would think that it's impossible to come up with a serving size that works for everyone every time.

Hi Spank! I have experienced the type of “wobbles” you’re describing reading text. Agree with you man it can be quite disorienting/discomforting. First happened years ago when I was still new to kratom. At my old job, I would read books in the time between finishing my assignment and punching out. Would also use kratom once finished with my assignment...hmmm, haha. I tried to ignore it but eventually had to admit the causal relationship. I took a break from kratom for this reason. Once I returned I had almost halved my amounts and set my self-control timer, it worked! This phenomenon does still happen to me from time to time, but in my experience its always after I’ve broken my own rules, which I do, haha. I’ve also noticed certain leaf can make me more sensitive to these symptoms. Never happens immediately either, only seems to become noticeable after I’ve been reading for a sustained amount of time. Almost feels like my eye movements begin to drift between manual and automatic modes, becoming harder to control, fighting to reset the ole saccade. I’m just some random anonymous asshole on the internet though, haha, if these symptoms continue please speak to a medical professional.

SpankMyFrank,
Don’t worry about it

I think Ballz was somewhat joking.
The supplemental facts and directions for dosing is “just a joke” also anyways as I’m sure you already know lol
Sure some people take 2g absolutely! But most people that aren’t noobs anymore and or have a strict dose size do more than 2g.

I did 2g 2 years ago lol
It is what it is
Everyone’s different;)

Could just be the batch btw regarding your “problem”!

This is DEFINITELY a Kratom problem SMF.
I have this problem too
Let me know if you struggle with this as well...

So, every now and then I am trying to read, and it’s almost as if my burn is numbing my vision (sounds weird right) but that’s how I would best describe it. My head and body is numb at times soo certain senses may be numb and different ones at different times etc etc. but I HAVE NOTICED many many times lately that when I try to read like anyone else each sentence Left to Right Ive noticed each word kind of fades away not like a blur but more like the black font with the white background its like the word just fades away as I’m scrolling my eyes down each sentence. Ive been meaning to talk about this and it’s been somewhat concerning as it is a peculiar nuisance..

Do you ever deal with this at all?
