Noob question about yellows and golds
I have been shaky on the discrepancies of yellows/golds and where they fall among the color spectrum. You’d think I’d have this figured out by now but I always end up finding conflicting information that makes me question things.
So here has been my (simplified) understanding of how they rank going from generally more stimulating to sedating:
White
Yellow (basically a mix between white and green)
Green
Gold (basically a mix between green and red)
Red
I keep reading things that swap gold and yellow, to where gold is more stimulating and yellow more sedating. I know strain colors are less important than we once believed, but has my take on it been generally correct?

Re: Noob question about yellows and golds
In my experience, it depends vendor to vendor. As indicated from Gumby's post and from about 60-70% of what I see from indonesian vendors, gold/yellow is a drying method. Without sharing everything, it is usually dried indoors like a green and then finished in the sun.
Some Indonesians don't do it this way and consider a gold/yellow just another blend. For example:

This is an example of an Indonesian mix chart. This particular vendor really only has 2 drying methods, red and green, and develops all their strains based on the mixes of these 2. Though seeing only 2 here, mixing charts like this are common, however most Indonesians have the 3 drying methods. The really good ones have perfected fermenting to make 6, a fermented green making a gold, a fermented white a yellow, and a fully fermented red achieving a bentuangie.
What amazes me is when someone mixes a Thai with a Bali and is like "Wow greatest blend ever!", when in reality all they made was roughly a "vein strain." You should ask your vendors exactly how their strains are made to know for sure, as true Malay, Thai, and Vietnam strains are very rare. Kratom doesn't grow on Bali, so it is typically a blend as well.

Re: Noob question about yellows and golds
Haha I figured it was significantly more complicated than I was imagining. I knew it had something to do with the drying process at least.
Thanks for the informative post! Out of the few I’ve tried, I’ve definitely noticed significantly more stimulation with your yellows than your golds. But as with all things, yeah, it definitely comes down to the specific strains in question.

Re: Noob question about yellows and golds
Great info. How does the fermenting of the white affect the stimulation of the white? I was about to put in an order of your yellow maeng da. Only thing that has me worried is i have had the worst luck with any white strains from every quality vendor ive tried. I love greens and good reds even more, but all whites have given me super bad anxiety every time. And ive tried a lot. Yellows on the other hand? Never gotten any negative affects. In fact a great yellow has been better than any red or green ive ever tried.fusedflora wrote:my yellows are all fermented whites, thus the stimulationBurninator wrote:Haha I figured it was significantly more complicated than I was imagining. Just chiming in to say that his Yellow MD is one of my favorite yellows atm. Just discovered it last week.zachdank wrote:Great info. Re: Noob question about yellows and golds
Ya ive got that from you and quite a few others. Which is why i was stoked to put in an order and try it for myself. Several of the best burns ive ever had were from different vendors and all yellow maeng das. SOSAs yellow maeng da is an all time favorite of mine. Just ordered a half kilo of it for my 3rd time. Consistently top shelf on every batch. Got an order from Mitraman a few months ago of all strains that were supposedly favorites of a bunch of people on here. Everyone of them was a dud for me. No affects at all. Except his yellow maeng da. That was pure fire. But all of the good Yellow maeng das ive tried had zero resemblance of any white ive tried. So Fusedfloras explanation of the different drying processes and blending was very interesting to me. Super insightful to hear about the variety of possibilities. Was FF ymd on the fast or slow side for you Burninator?Just chiming in to say that his Yellow MD is one of my favorite yellows atm. Just discovered it last week.

I haven’t placed a MM order yet this year but I still have some of his Yellow MD and yeah it’s been the best strain of my last few orders each time.zachdank wrote:Ya ive got that from you and quite a few others. I’d say FF’s is mid spec but leans slightly on the faster side. Yellows are weird for me. They’re the one stimulating strain that still tend to make me pass out lol.
