Does this extract pricing make sense?

Post by zeroblackzx »

I was looking into TEK for making extract at home and was confused after looking into powder pricing vs extract pricing on some retailer sites.

I wont list the specific site Im using this information from but this is what I gathered:

For an extract powder - it is 40x and for 28g it is $65

For some regular powder - it is $25 for 112g.

If the extract is 40x, then each g of extract equals 40g of powder, right? Then 28g of extract is equal to 1120g of normal powder.
Then, for $65 youre getting the equivalent of $250 worth of normal powder? (not taking into account any bulk discounts)

That doesn't make much sense to me... Am I missing something?

No, that's about right.

So the first thing to realize with extracts is that vendors don't use the good powder to make it... they use the bunk powder. There's no reason to waste good powder, as the good powder will sell just fine. But extracts are a great way to make use of a bunk batch or leftovers. Though there's extra work converting powder to extract, it is still cost effective to use waste, rather than throw it out.

Imagine getting 50k of mild/terrible powder after trying some awesome samples in a bait and switch from a foreign supplier. It's not beneficial to sell sub-standard product, in most cases this hurts business more than it helps. Getting that capital back is difficult with crappy powder without doing extracts.

It's usually a mix of all the left over powder (not enough to complete a bag) or bunk batches. Notice how there's never a green, red, or white extract....? At that point, just making some money back is better than nothing, hence the extract.

40x can refer to the amount of leaf used on the extract. 40 grams of leaf for 1 gram of extract. It isn't going to sell at the same price as the leaf it came from as there is not a zero-loss extraction method that would make it 40x more potent than normal leaf. The effective strength would be less than 40.

Once again, I gotta thank you for taking the time to answer my questions :) You have been very helpful and I very much appreciate it!

Now that I have thought about it more, this 10x, 20x, 40x etc etc system is extremely... unhelpful? I suppose it gives a general idea of "potency" but what if I made two extracts:

1st with 50g of really good kratom
2nd with 50g of sub-par/bunk kratom

Since I used 50g for each one, they would label them 50x

However, because of the difference in kratom quality they were made from, the concentration of alkaloids, the actual potency of a gram could be massively different between the two.

I have been weighing my doses for a long time because I want to be consistent to keep my tolerance in check. But now that I think about it, 5g of one strain could be equal to 2.5g of another. The way extracts are labelled isn't exactly a measure of potency like how I thought it was..

Does that make sense?

I have spent wayyyyy too long on this today, my brain is so fried right now I honestly wouldnt be surprised if this is completely incoherent -_-
So Im gonna cross my fingers, submit this, and make a stiff drink. Cheers

Correct, 40-1 extract from beer is def not the same as 40-1 as jack daniels. It's very unpredictable unless the vendor has had the alk % tested. I know there's a lot of alks in kratom that achieve difference effects, but in extracts, a number of the alks are removed, the mit/7ohm would be the most important for effects.
