Once a number is chosen, the person to claim it first has taken that number. It is clearly stated how the contest works.

What if 5 or 10 people choose the same number? How would that work? It gets too messy.

That’s why the rule is in place that once a number is claimed, any other claims to that same number are void. Just makes things easier.
