Kratom no longer on drugs list

The Kratom plant has been removed from a list of narcotics listed under the amended Narcotics Act.

Justice Minister Somsak Thepsutin said the Act has been modified and the new version was published in the Royal Gazette on Wednesday to annul the plant's narcotics status.

The amendment will take effect on Aug 24, Mr Somsak said.

He thanked the organisations involved in pushing for the plant's removal from the list, noting Kratom is a part of local people's lifestyle.

However, cultivation of the plant will still be restricted until a new law to regulate kratom plantations is enacted, the justice minister said.

He said this legislation, also known as the Kratom Law, will detail how the plant is allowed to be used.

It has currently been approved by the Council of State, and the Justice Ministry will forward a proposal to the cabinet.

The ministry has worked with the Food and Drug Administration on an announcement declaring the legality of kratom.

Regarding ongoing criminal cases, the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) has been ordered to identify cases that have not been finalised.

It is expected to drop pending cases after the law comes into effect.

Kratom is typically used in traditional medicine.

However, the plant is known to have stimulating effects on the mind, which makes it a popular recreational drug -- one of the reasons why it was classified as a narcotic for many years.

Thanks for posting. ONE "big problem" in Thailand... there ain't any more kratom trees in Thailand.

The "plant" has been destroyed by government there over 10 years of systematic cutting down/ burning any wild trees... So "plantation" kratom ? Will take a good 5+ years before we start seeing any quality product from there...

But the Legal issue is very important. Puts Indonesia (and Malaysia) on notice - Kratom IS a money maker, in high demand all around the world!

Surprised to see this since SE Asia has the toughest drug laws in the world. Even certain plants that aren't drugs, like kratom and other herbals, are banned.

In some SE Asian countries, they will hang you for even having marijuana. They do this because they don't want asian drug cartels using their ports and spreading drugs throughout their countries. Thus, they make extremely strict drug laws with capital punishment.

I actually lived in Singapore for a couple years during school and got to travel all over SE Asia (Indonesia, malaysia, nepal, etc) Singapore is a gorgeous country. Clean, extremely safe, and modern. A lot of this is because of their strict laws. When I was there, it was right after the whole Michael Fey getting caned thing. Remember that? Dumbass american kid spray painted a Singaporean Senator's car and got some lashes of the cane for his dumbassery.
