Help, what strain is best for insomnia?

Post by Jordan Borneohale »

My sister and I were just discussing the use of alternative/natural cures for my chronic insomnia. I mentioned that they cost so much more than my prescription and don't work as well.

I've been having sleep difficulties over the last few months. things haven't been good in my office since Covid although all the people here have been working their ass off. this stresses me out.

after a few intakes on my prescription (which is expensive for me), I'm wondering if I should try kratom. I've read here and there about its benefits and am, to be honest, quite concerned about the potential risk.

So what do you think? Should I try kratom? Is it worth the risk? and what strain is best for insomnia?

I haven't tried it but from all the descriptions I've read, it seems red Sumatra is best for sleep.

Asking about Kratom on this forum is a bit like asking on the Apple forum if the iPhone is any good (because you've heard bad things about it). Clearly almost all of us here are going to tell you how wonderful it is.

The better question is where you are hearing bad things about Kratom and what, specifically, they are. There are clearly forces which profit by its removal (cough, cough, Big Pharma) and those folks who foster questions about ANYTHING that might possibly make you feel good that goes against their Puritan beliefs. But if you do the scientific research you'll see that Kratom is one of the most benign safest supplements you can try. There is ZERO evidence that anyone has ever overdosed with it, for example (unlike, say, aspirin which can and does kill a whole lot of folks).

The worst that can possibly happen with using it is you may become psychological addicted - not physically (some would argue this is a small possibility). You can get psychological addicted to anything (I used to be to Dr. Pepper - literally. I had to drink two quarts a day for 3 decades. But I kicked the habit cold turkey). As long as you don't have an addictive personality you don't need to worry (and even many who do find that Kratom is no issue - mostly because you really can't chase a "high" but for other reasons as well).

So... give it a try. Most people would recommend the red strain (white, green, red are really the only three, with all else being mostly marketing differentiation) from a small, quality vendor (listed on this forum). Take no more than 3 grams to start with but you can up the dose until you find the sweet spot (for me it's usually around six). And make sure you try at least two or three different vendors/strains - some might "hit" you perfectly while others won't work at all. Does it help with sleep? Absolutely - last night I took a green from Denette and I slept like a baby (waking up and crying all night long - no, all seriousness aside I slept quiet and peaceful filled with a feeling of contentment and joy). Reds don't work particularly well with me but some do and they do tend to promote sleep (as a rule I'd stay away from whites anytime close to bedtime).

And if you have a lot of anxiety at work you may well find taking a green or white at the start of your day will also work wonders. It absolutely can't hurt to try.

Here are my notes viewtopic.php?f=17&t=9684

Some standouts to read:
Denettes Red Geodong: sk8
Fused Flora Gold Maeng Da: 4070221
Gulf coast Green Green Hulu Kapuas (Lot A2)
Rhino Wild Red Kasongan: 013021c

The gulf coast green Hulu knocked me out like no other
It’s cheap to try, what you’re only risking $10-$20?

I have had chronic sleep onset insomnia for decades due to anxiety. The significance will come and go and but when it is bad, it is really bad and impacts my life to an extreme amount. I have taken many things for it including temazepam which is an addictive benzo. But I was desperate - my second son was nine months old, I had a three year old and was working full time and literally felt like I was going insane due to a lack of sleep - and it helped get me back to actually sleeping and I truly believe it saved me. And I got off of it once after about six months to get through the depths of my worst stint of insomnia (hell ambien wouldn’t even work). Still kept some at the house for a long time after for the peace of mind. I have also used pot habitually in the past to help me sleep which it makes my sleep suck but it will knock me out. I offer this all in that we have to balance risk versus reward and with insomnia, the reward is sleep and for me, being able to function as a mom, partner and colleague. Kratom is not without its risks but it has helped me with anxiety and scoliosis pain enough that I am ok with it. However I also do a lot to address those potential risks which means specific supplements and other herbs, having very set guardrails with how much I take and how often, and building in breaks. Harm reduction is important in our world.

There is no specific strain that anyone can say for sure. Strains are made up names by vendors for different batches or blends. Also, some people only experience insomnia as a side effect no matter the strain or amount although a larger dose is said to be sedating and a lower dose energizing. I still have to take xan to help me sleep and recently am having so much stress had to increase it for 1st time in years, and I take 10-15g of kratom per day for chronic pain and fatigue.

okay. Next I'll be asking better things about this kratom here. Thank You.
I'd try green too if red doesn't work, because the problem is workplace anxiety as you suggest. I am very grateful

Thank You. so all give the same effect?
it's just a name difference for kratom.
Fatigue and anxiety are the source of this insomnia for me, I will follow your advice on 10-15g of kratom per day.

Um, 10-15 grams per day might be WAY too much for you. Or it might not. Don't let others dosages determine what you take. No matter what others might say about strains, about effects, about ANYTHING Kratom related the one absolute is that only YOU can determine the amount that is best. You need to find the sweet spot and stick with it. That, along with breaks from time to time (taking two-three days off) will make Kratom work for you very well, indeed.

Just to get on the record here, because we're all different here in how kratom affects us -

I've been using kratom for about maybe 9 months, and it's been a Godsend for me - I have osteoarthritis, and I pretty much hurt all the time (not horribly, but not fun).

I've made it a rule that I only dose once a day, every other day, in order to avoid building a tolerance and needing to increase my dosage. Most people on here take a lot more than I do, but I find that by spacing it like that, every time is a good time.

I recommend starting with two grams, just so you don't overdo it the first time (and you'll need a scale to be accurate, once you decide if it works for you). If all is well, bump it up to 3 grams. I've found that my sweet spot is usually 4 grams, with most strains - on some, I back off a bit.

For me, since I only use it once a day (mornings) every other day, it's mostly just a sweet 3-5 hour break from my usual aches and pains. And good kratom also has the benefit of a nice minor euphoric rush as it starts, a lot of times with a gentle "all is well with the world" feeling that can last a while longer. Kratom can't be compared to stronger drugs, really, it's not like them - in fact, if you take more than your body says you should, you'll just get nauseated and probably get what we call "the wobbles" or "the wobblies" - not a pleasant feeling.

Hopefully it'll help you with your sleep by easing anxiety during the day, and I know some on here do use it at night for sleep, it's just not what I do.

Stay away from kratom "stores" - don't buy from head shops, gas stations, etc., you have no idea what may be in it, and it'll be low quality. And scour this forum for good info - there's a lot here!

Good luck in your search!

I found out a very fast white, if you double your dose always put me to sleep.... Its like drinking a big cup of strong coffee very fast, it crash me real quick, a nap or good long sleep awaits you. Same theory behind it. thats why iam careful with whites now, for fast whites, less is more 100% unless you want a nappy time. Reds are tricky, at low dose it can keep you awake all night, so best to triple the dose or see how double the dose first affects you.. But in all honestly only do this if you dont have any there sleeping tools to use. You do not want to spike your tolerance. Only do the double the dose for fast whites if you rally need that restful sleep. Make sure its a white that you tested and know that its clean with out wobbles. there are whites that are clean which if you over take is best sweet sleep and there are whites if over take gives you wobbles. Know your batches.

My favorite one that i use once in a while after a stressful day is https://buy-kratom.us/maeng-da-kratom/w ... lbs_powder , their WMD has proven again and again to be the most effective for me, be it 2-3 grams with coffee, nice uplifting joyful day start. Or 5-6 grams at night time, zooms me right into sleep zone. I have no clue how they dry their leaf but i sure do think they mastered it perfectly. It could be just my body works very well with it so not saying it will work the same for you but it wont hurt if you order a little and see if that will work the same as it did for me. Their white has always been great, no matter what time or season you order from them. I think their comment section is truthful, almost all 5 stars. Me personally i would give it 4.5 rating since i had better whites. But its still very good. You could add strongest relaxing red batch you got with this white, you will just have even better sleep.

By the way, i use around 6 grams per day, so if you a high doser, i would advice adjust and play around with dosage, once you get the right dosage, you will sleep good. Chamomile tea with it is just guaranteed good sleep. Or if you in legal state get 10mg or 20mg gummys THC candy, if not in legal state you can always try the delta 8 gummys, they works pretty well as well, just stop by any CBD shop or can be ordered online. It will increase deep REM sleep.

I like the fact you mention a white can put you to sleep. I always take a white before tennis, and when I come home I nearly always fall asleep for my midday nap. I *thought* it was the exercise (plus lunch) but I also felt there was a bit of Kratom affecting me and your explanation fits. Like right now I feel SO sleepy, much more so than without the white I took this morning.

The downside of trying this for me would be I'd need to take the white quite early - say around 4pm but no later than 5pm - in order to be sleepy for bedtime. I took my white this morning around 7:30am and it's now five hours later and I can't keep my eyes open (so off to bed :>).
