Oxy to Kratom

Hi, I had an accident and the doctors want me to take oxycodone as needed to deal with pain for about a week. I'm not on a ton of it as I am also taking ibuprofen. I have stopped kratom while recovering.

My question is, when I'm ready to get off the oxycodone, I should be safe to start taking kratom again as long as it's been a reasonable amount of time since my last dose of oxycodone right? Like if I took oxy last dose in afternoon and then had kratom some time next day mid morning I should be fine right?

Yes. Basically wait until you are in pain again and then switch to the kratom. It's healthy to check in and get a sense of what hurts in between taking painkillers anyways.

there's no harm in taking kratom too soon after your last painkiller dose. the only issue you might have is that the kratom won't feel as strong. there are some meds that you'd want to make sure to take far apart - like suboxone, because it contains naloxone which is a pure antagonist, and that can put you into precipitated withdrawals. not an issue here.

I agree with creatus, just wait at least a good 6-8 hours after the final oxy dose, and go based on how you feel. you're ready when you feel like you want to/need to dose. the longer you wait, the better the effects will be when you start the kratom again.

question, have you already started the oxy? if so, it is more effective as a pain reliever than the kratom? I ask because I have been prescribed hydrocodone for post-op pain before, and it was nowhere near as effective as kratom in actual pain relief. now, hydrocodone is only about 2/3 the strength of oxycodone, but even taking higher doses of hydro, I always just preferred the kratom for pain. that made me realize for the first time just how great of a painkiller kratom can be.

I agree with you IF you have been taking opioids (or at least the traditional ones) for some time. You build up a tolerance for them really quickly, and almost no one I know who has used them more than two or three SEPARATE occasions thinks they are as good as they were when first prescribed (which is what leads to the problems of abuse).

I was taking three or four a week for quite a long time (years) and they essentially did nothing. Kratom is what allowed me to stop them cold turkey and a year later and I've never even tried one. So - if the OP has already had oxy in the past I'd suggest skipping it entirely.

Yes, already started the oxy. They have been giving it to me since I was at the hospital. I broke my jaw in a bicycle accident. Luckily its not wired shut, they've got elastic bands instead, so I can open my mouth a bit.

The oxy has been working for me, I was worried that my kratom use would lessen the effects of it, but for me personally, it has been helping with the pain (pain is not 100% absent but it definitely helps). I do feel like the oxy would be better for this specific kind of pain than kratom, but i dont have much to compare to as i mostly take kratom for mental health and sleep issues, not pain.

My plan was to take my last dose of oxy on Monday (the day the docs recommended I would probably be good to discontinue), and then resume kratom on Tuesday.

Thanks for your response. I've not had oxy in the past. I'll be on it for a week by Monday, which is the day I plan to stop as i feel my pain is turning a corner here (also the day doctors recommended to discontinue). I've actually been taking less than what they said I could take as a maximum dose.

yikes...I've been there. my jaw got fractured on the lower mandible right where it meets my skull, on the side of my face. it was wired shut for 8 weeks, and it was a complete anxiety-ridden nightmare. consider yourself very fortunate you didn't have to go through that. I wish I had had kratom back then...I would have had to make tea out of it, but it would have helped so much more than the hydrocodone. the funny part is, they prescribed it to me in pill form.

haha. well I called the clinic and they were not helpful. I can't remember what they said, but I ended up buying a pill grinder. I would mix the powder in a little liquid and drink it. it didn't work well, it was hard to get the powder through my teeth. they weren't even that effective at relieving the pain.

the oral surgeon wired my jaw shut in an awkward way, so that my bottom teeth were constantly pressing into the back of my front teeth. again, I called the doctor and he seemed unconcerned, but man was it painful and sore all the time.
