I'm a kratom newb, polling veterans to see if old kratom - opened or unopened - can maintain potency after multiple years on the shelf.
Might help me decide if "hoarding" good batches of kratom now is a viable strategy.

Stored properly (away from moisture and oxygen), it will stay potent for many years. So yes, hoarding is certainly a viable strategy. I have kratom in my collection from 8 years ago. I recommend vacuum sealing or mason jars.

I would not worry at all.

epoison is absolutely correct about moisture. However, I have kept bags sloppily opened for YEARS!! This stuff is resilient af!

I'm currently using Kratom from nearly six years ago. Lol, though I'm about to review some samples I received a couple of weeks ago.

Just keep it dry.

Absolutely. I have been luxuriating in the classics from 2016 - 2020. I really, really love my vintage leaf

This is the answer. Stored correctly, that is - sealed back up (at least ziplocked properly) and stored in a cool/dry place, there is really no reason it would degrade much (if at all) as it is already dried. I will add that some of my older stock (2017-2020 or so) does seem a bit more 'stale' tasting, but that just means I need to add more orange juice and not worry about it ha-ha.

Definitely! I have bags from 2017 and still good. Occasionally I will find that a bag that i thought was sealed, but it wasn't...and has been exposed to air for a long time... and I have found no significant loss in effect. I always store away from light and heat... and I strive to keep bags tightly sealed... but I still keep older opened bags.

I have some Kratom that is over 10 years old that works great. As other have said, just keep it sealed and dry, it will be fine.

Stays good forever if kept dry.

My favorite batch is a batch...Red....Indo? I'll check when I get home but that means I have to dose it, but it's from a long gone company called Sacred Plant Life and it just turned ten.

It's the best I've got besides the true Malaysians which are in a whole other class of best. And some Sosa reds (that shall remain nameless) from 8-19 will knock your socks off.

There are good new ones too, but sometimes it takes patience to acclimate yourself to them.

I have and it's still good. I have all mine stored in a cool, dark place and rotate it. I haven't had any issues with it not working

I purposely age my Kratom leaf powder for a year+ min usually.


I buy in bulk and often try to put away for a yr+ before using most of it. So I have different batches in rotation from 1-4ish yrs old.
I would aim to use it before 5-10yrs as I'm sure there's diminishing returns at a point somewhere. But I'd still use it older, just wouldn't purposely age it past a few yrs. Imo

Felt like it just works better for me (which makes sense now because of 7-oh etc oxidization haha.

I do rec keep it in a cool dry dark place, preferably well sealed if for multi yr storage.
I got about 20kg put away. (17kg of one order/batch when I got 20kg 2yrs ago)

Ofcourse if you start out with crappy Kratom, you still have crappy Kratom hahaha

wait you have 17kg of the same strain? or just a 17kg of various strains

I'm 35 and want to be a kratom lifer, heard the powder oxidizes a bit and gets slower after about 5 years. would love to buy a big enough stash to just sit on it forever but I prefer faster strains so I'll just keep enough to last me a few years and just pray it stays legal lol

I found an unopened kilo of Gaia something(Red Borneo?) from 2016 last year in my huge collection. I opened it & tried it. Knocked me on my butt. It ended up being the best strain I had in 2024.

hey there Pray ! yes, Gaia was our first Online Vendor, my Bro & I dared to try... back in 2016 iirc White Dragon ??

the Gaia story in 2017 -19 then became, a sadly typical one... of putting almighty $ Profit before quality... Bad batches (Sell it anyway!), drama on Reddit, with Partners accusing the other of theft, reports of Indo's being cheated, ripped off... finally Salmonella - made 100's of their customers SICK ~

I agree that a proven, Good Batch from 5- 7 years ago, IF stored in cool darkness... Would retain its' potency. Mainly due to improvements in processing - To solve the terrible problem of a 97% DIRT product- being infected with microbials ... Bacteria & pathogens. Today's "Bulk Raw" powder gets treated with gamma rays & Heat ("Pasteurized") to kill all the bugs, which also destroys % of the alkaloids... As explained here on MM by JFish (major importer Herbal RVA) a few years ago.

I wouldn't worry. As long as it is stored properly (sealed, dark, cool area), you should be good. I've had kratom that's a few years old and it still hits.
