So, I recently came in to quite a bit of stem and vein, whole, and crushed leaf that is a little underpowered when compared to the powder we are used to buying. It is maybe about 25% potency of a current good quality strain. I’ve decided to try my hand in a little different extraction process. Here is what I have done so far:
83g of crushed leaf
9 cups water
Juice of 1 lemon
Mix ingredients in 6 quart sized Instant Pot, cook on “Meat/Stew” setting on “HIGH” pressure (15psi) for 20 minutes. Strain contents through 4 layers of cheesecloth into a stove type pot. Squeeze liquid out of strained leaves. Simmer until reduced by 50%
This is where I am now. After the reduction is complete, my plan is to pour remaining liquid into two 9x13 Pyrex dishes and bake at 350 degrees until dried. Scrape contents to one Pyrex dish and crush/mix to uniform consistency.
I will keep you posted on how everything turns out. If you own an Instant Pot, you probably understand the infatuation with using it for everything. We are a family of 6 and it has literally changed our lives!
I have a couple updates. First up, I was pleasantly surprised how fast the water cooked off. I had it on a medium-ish heat, just below boiling and I got roughly 75% of the liquid cooked off in about an hour. Second, I didn’t realize how late it was when I started, so I’m afraid I won’t be able to finish tonight. This may be a blessing in disguise. Now, I have the opportunity to pour the liquid into a single 9x13 Pyrex and I’m putting that thing in the deep freeze over night. I plan to thaw out after work tomorrow and continue with the baking process to finish everything out.

haha I was literaly thinking "freeze" before I read the part about your freezing.. good job and we're looking forward to it!
Straining is of course the hardest part, messy and all.. Bake drying the final step, I've used Parchment Paper to line the pyrex baking pan, on the positive side there's no scraping, (corners of the pan are a mess.), keep a close eye on and finish as soon as it appears mostly dry. However the parchment does seem to absorb a color, probably just oils from the gunk but I have to wonder if I'm losing anything there? I have also got a Tek from a very experienced Extract maker who uses high grade Saran Wrap as pan liner, bake at very low temps. Pop out when finished and you just peel it off.. idk, seems too risky of melting that stuff?

For straining, I set a spaghetti strainer down in a stove pot and lined the strainer with cheesecloth. Then I brought all the corners in to the middle and twisted to wring the leaves out. It was surprisingly tidy and anxiety free.
And I probably wouldn’t ever put plastic wrap in the oven for any reason...
This sounds awesome! I've never made extract but I have a TEK saved that I've been meaning to use. Let us know how it turns out. Post pictures of the final product.
So, I got the experiment finished up tonight. I took the frozen Pyrex dish out of the freezer and put it in the oven at 315 degrees, where it stayed for an hour and 45 minutes, at which time we needed to use the oven at a higher temperature for dinner. I put the dish on the stove and I figured it wouldn’t hurt anything to turn the burner on low in the mean time. This went on for an hour and a half or so, and I would reposition the dish every so often. The liquid is now a thick, tar-like substance that makes large bubbles. When I popped bubbles with a spoon, the stuff would stick tight to the spoon. The oven freed up again, so I put it back in there for a few minutes to firm up the last bits of tar stuff. I took it out and it almost looked like some sort of nasty brownie, but it was all very brittle and crispy. It reminded me a lot of water soluble coffee crystals after I scraped it all out. I would bet this is how they are made. I ended up with 21.33 grams of this dry extract. I put it into a plastic baggie and it my wife pinched it all up into a fine powder. I started with 83 grams of leafy stuff so I’ll have to find the equation to figure how concentrated it is. I think I’ll try maybe a gram of this stuff in the morning. Remember, the leaf I used was slightly immature and not to the potency that most of us are used to. I will keep you all updated.

I used the extract a lot, but never really felt anything from it. It seemed like by the time I used enough to feel anything, it was probably going to be feeling something from the alcohol.
