I've been markedly enjoying my time on earth more ever since I started using kratom for pain management. My girlfriend has expressed interest in trying it for her pain (oh man, are we a pair!), but she has a known codeine allergy. Does anyone know if kratom has any adverse reactions in people due to their codeine intolerance? Thanks!

Personally I don't think there is anyone who could in good conscience give you a definitive answer about this, I just don't think enough is known and any information you could gather on it would be anecdotal and might not apply to your girlfriends specific case. Here is an article about codeine allergies that talks about how there is rarely cross sensitivity across the three categories of opioids , but that someone with "a true allergic reaction to one of the opioid analgesics should be monitored carefully if an agent from another class is substituted". It also talks about pseudo allergy, which is caused by the histamine reaction.

I found a couple reddit thread about the topic . But it's a bad bad bad idea to take medical advice from reddit, or from me really . I'm not even going to link them .

depending on how severe the allergic reaction is I would proceed with caution.

You would think lowest amount would make sense, something like 0.5 gram. To see if there is any reaction but i am also not a doctor so..

You have to test it out at ur own risk. Would I expect them to react to the same allergy when they are so different? No, but that doesn't mean it won't. Proceed slowly with caution.

No worries about not having a definitive answer, but thanks to everyone for trying! I'm hesitant to talk to my (or her) doctor, as I haven't opened that door yet, but I'll think a little more about this and either try it with a tiny dose or just not at all...

Not trying to grave dig or anything, but was just curious; whatever came of this, did she end up trying it?

Nah, didn't want to risk it, since no one had a definitive answer here. Now's not exactly the best time to take any chances that could land you in the hospital!
