Surgery and Kratom

Getting total hip replacement in a week. Been a Kratom user for years. Anyone get put under on Kratom?

On kratom? No. My last dose before disc replacement in my neck was 8 hours prior. I disclosed this the anesthesiologist, and he had no problem with it. They gave me fentanyl as part of sedation, and I received more fentanyl before I left the hospital. I went immediately back to kratom that evening at home and it hit every bit as good.

Definitely be open with your surgeon, and everyone involved. They are the experts on what's safe!

Normally I'd be hesitant to bring up kratom in a medical setting (we've all seen how docs can react to it when they're unfamiliar and uninformed... and there are some horror stories of bad reactions out there)... but in the case of surgery? Definitely mention it. The anesthesiologist needs to know eeeverything.

If I personally was going to have surgery, I'd probably try to taper off the week beforehand, just because we know so little about possible interactions. It'd be one less thing to be nervous about, at least. I'd go right back to it post-procedure though.

I probably would disclose to the anesthesiologist, but I also wouldn't necessarily trust their judgement. I think it's very possible they wouldn't have ever heard of kratom. I think it's probably fine to have taken kratom recently, but there is a small chance that you could experience some type of drug interaction.

The pharmacokineticist theorises that kratom could partially prevent fentanyl from being cleared from the brain, which could contribute to an overdose. This is just a theory, but not one I'd want to ignore. To be safe I'd probably abstain from kratom for the week leading up to surgery.

I dont know if you've had your surgery yet, but I've had Kratom the night before my knee replacement (I'm 35) and everything went well. I wouldn't suggest it the day of, mostly because you're not allowed to eat or drink anything the morning of surgery

Bumping this thread as I had an emergency surgery yesterday - it was a very sudden thing so I didn't have the ability to plan a week off from kratom ahead of time. I was dreading telling the team about kratom after hearing so many horror stories about docs reacting poorly, but I told both of my anesthesiologists about it, as well as a nurse, and none of them had any idea what it even was, lol. The only way I could think to describe it was that it was a supplement.

The last dose I had was early Saturday afternoon, 3.5g as that's become my standard. The whole hospital fiasco began maybe two hours later and I was in surgery Sunday morning, so there was barely a full day between that dose and the time surgery began. To my knowledge they didn't have to do anything special to account for it, and there were no complications, I didn't wake up during, etc. Obviously I can't say my experience will be everybody's but I figure that until we have more definitive data about kratom, all we can do is keep pooling our anecdotes together, so... there's mine!

I am now! It came out of nowhere though. I was getting ready for a book club meeting and suddenly was hit by some of the worst pain I've ever felt, full-on writhing around on the floor it was so bad. After ~12 hours in the ER we learned the culprit was necrotic tissue and a resulting infection. Needless to say, I missed my book club this week. But recovery is going well so far. Just very tired.

I had brain surgery this morning and only had a 12 hr Kratom break.Everything went as should with no problems.I had brain surgery in March also with a 12 hr break.no problems with anesthesia. I didn’t tell my doctors because I don’t want to be red flagged just in case I need pain medication one day

It sucks that we have to make that choice. I completely understand. I don't trust any of my doctors, or at least none have given me any reason to think they would be trustworthy. I just started seeing a new endocrinologist who may prove themselves so, but time will tell yet.

Wow, that sucks. Sudden pain is the worst! Glad you're feeling better!

Hope you're recovering well! I wouldn't mention kratom to the doc either, unless I needed emergency surgery and needed to be put under. I think in that situation, it's best to be honest.

However, mention anything like that during a routine visit and they put a note in your file. I mentioned once to my doc about drinking (back when I drank a lot before finding kratom) and then when I really needed pain meds for an injury (had a gout flareup - ouch!) like a year later, they wouldn't give them to me because of the note in my file about alcohol.

Now with doctors I just keep my mouth shut.
