Thank you for contacting me to share your views on the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) scheduling of the herbal substance kratom. I appreciate you taking the time to make me aware of your concerns on this important matter.

The DEA is considering whether kratom should be classified as a Schedule I drug under the Controlled Substances Act. Like heroin or LSD, Schedule I drugs are deemed to have no accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse. While proponents highlight kratom’s effectiveness in treating opioid addiction, anxiety, depression and pain, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) believes additional medical and scientific evaluation is required to confirm its safety.

As your Senator, I am committed to supporting efforts that help prevent and treat drug abuse in the United States. That means investing in medical research that keeps our communities safe from negative health impacts and preventing or treating drug addiction. The FDA plays a significant role in evaluating the efficacy and safety of controlled substances, and I support relying on scientific findings to guide these policy decisions. Rest assured, I will continue to monitor the DEA’s deliberation on kratom and support legislation that increases patient access to evidence-based treatment.

@Goat, you live in IL?

Tammy was my rep as well before she switched. I too sent an email to my rep (here in IL) and got a more positive reply. At the moment her name escapes me (not Tammy)...she was more diplomatic with her reply to me but essentially said she wasn't planning on banning Kratom without more facts.
