*IMPORTANT* Coronavirus Update - A Vendors Point Of View

Post by gumbyke1 »

So no too long ago I mentioned in another coronavirus topic that I would discourage people from "panic buying" because we were nowhere near a reason for concern. I also said that I would update the community if I (from a vendor's point of view) saw that there was a possibility for disruption in the kratom market.

I want to start out by saying I still do not think its time to start panic buying! However, I do think it's prudent that folks put the possibility of it in the future on the radar. Before I get into my thoughts, I want to point out that I am just a private vendor....all I can offer are my honest observations as a participant in the kratom industry. I have no more information than anyone else on how this will play out in society, so please frame everything I share with that in mind. Everyone is responsible for their own well-being and your response to this incident should reflect as such. Basically.... dont blame me for whatever actions you decide to take when it comes to being prepared!

Now - the reason I say is its not time to panic is because right now I dont see an immediate threat to the kratom supply. In talking with many partners in Indonesia, the supply lines are still moving. The reason I share that it should be on the radar is that we have seen in other parts of the world that things could change sharply within a span of a couple of weeks.

Up until the past few days ago, I hadn't been overly concerned with how the kratom industry would be affected in the near-term. I certainly expected that at some point we would experience some minor disruptions, but not to the point where I thought folks would not be able to access kratom. In my mind, everything we have recently seen occur in parts of China just didnt correlate with what we could expect here. In the very recent past, we have seen similarly serious outbreaks occur in China like MERS, SARS,etc... all of which never materialized into anything to be concerned about in the US. However, it's becoming evident that Covid-19, although far less deadly than MERS, etc..., it is a much greater threat to our society because of how highly transmissible it appears to be.

We have all seen how China is dealing with the virus, and while transmissions have slowed, it is nowhere near becoming under control. China's healthcare system is certainly no match for that of most Western countries, however, China has a very powerful tool to deal with the virus that western countries do not.... and that is an authoritarian form of government. China is able to implement some extremely effective measures that just wouldnt be palatable to freedom-loving societies (like welding apartment building doors closed). Now, these certainly do not result in better care for the citizens in affected areas, but it does bring some measure of protection for the rest of the country as a whole. Why does this matter? Well, I think it demonstrates that countries on a whole will have very little success in ultimately stopping the spread of the disease. It seems that a serious pandemic is inevitable. If an authoritarian government like China cannot stop it - our only hope is that the more advanced healthcare systems of the west could somehow provide a better solution. And then there was Italy....

In the year 2000, the Italian healthcare system was ranked among the best in the world - only second to France (according to the WHO rankings). Now I know many will argue that those rankings do not truly reflect the "best healthcare" because much of those rankings were based on access.... not quality (for example... if you are sick the US is still where you want to be for treatment or major surgeries). I also know that since 2000 there has been a steady decline in their access due to forced austerity (its expensive to have the 2nd best system in the world)- however, they still very much remain a good measure for how a western healthcare system would manage the current crisis. With all of that said, the recent events in Italy have personally given me pause.

It's becoming clearly apparent that no government, no matter how well equipped, is positioned well to prevent the spread of the virus. Right now it appears our only hope is to slow it down as much as possible in hopes of producing a vaccine before it infects everyone. Unfortunately, the reality is that no matter how much you throw at it, producing a vaccine that is human-ready is more than a year away. There is also talk that warm temperatures might slow down the infection rates, but all that really means is that infections will move to the southern hemisphere and return again here in the winter with the rest of the seasonal flus. In other words... we are in for a ride.

With Italy being a western country with similar ideology and general approach to governing (yes I am aware there are differences), I think they are a close example of what fighting the virus might look like here in the US. With that, I think it's a good idea to look towards how things have progressed over there to try and predict how things might look here.

What is very sobering to me is that it was only a little over a month ago when we were reading about a handful of infections in Italy. Fast forward 6 weeks and that number has surpassed 10,000 with 631 deaths. What we have to understand is that the virus spreads exponentially... its about to get crazy. If a few people can cause the infection of over 10,000 people in a span of 6 weeks, what is that going to look like in another 6 weeks? Its a simple calculation, and its terrifying.

Now, those few grew to 10,000 because there were little efforts being doen to prevent the spread (similarly to the way we are currently in the US). The alarm bells have now sounded in Italy, and steps are being taken to reduce infection rates. However, from what we have seen so far, it doesn't give me a great deal of confidence. Earlier in the week, Italy announced what was considered a drastic measure in ordering a lockdown of Northern Italy (which is the area that was most affected). The decision to only lock down parts of Italy may have been a terrible miscalculation, as it resulted in many "healthy" people fleeing the north in order to avoid being trapped in the "sick zone". Of course the only problem with that is that some of these "healthy people" were not healthy at all and instead just spread the virus to the south and across other parts of Europe. As a result, there are now cases of the virus confirmed in all 20 Italian regions. Italian citizens are ordered to stay at home a seek permission for essential travel. Some families are currently separated, as a result of loved ones being away on travel during the time the lockdown was announced. Mr Conte (the Italian Prime Minister) said of the outbreak: "I have been thinking about the old speeches of [Winston] Churchill - it is our darkest hour, but we will make it". Anytime you are digging up Churchill quotes to reflect the current condition, it's not a good thing.

So one has to wonder, are we currently here in the US where Italy was 6 weeks ago? Should we expect a similar fate 4-6 weeks from now? Who knows, but I think it would be foolish to assume we will somehow completely come out of this unscathed. While I am one to stay away from the twitter world, I came across a really informative "tweet thread" (sorry if that is not what it's called) that using math, showed how our healthcare system would handle what Italy is currently experiencing. It certainly didnt give me warm fuzzies. If you care to read through it, you can find it in the link below:

Now, what does all of this mean for the kratom industry? Well, I have no idea. I can, however, share with you what I am hearing from other vendors and what I am personally keeping on my radar.

- Right now speaking with Indonesian suppliers, the Indonesian kratom industry is not currently affected. Indonesia has not been hard hit by the virus, everything right now is operating as normal. My guess is that if the industry begins to be impacted it will at a regional level first, giving vendors a short window to react before everything is halted. I want to emphasize that is a guess... who really knows what will happen.

- In speaking with other vendors of various vendor groups - right now people are discussing the difficulties they are experiencing with acquiring business supplies. For whatever reason, there are delays in receiving goods that are non-pandemic related such as packaging materials, etc.. The more obvious issues involve being able to acquire the personal protection equipment needed to properly package kratom (sanitation masks, etc...).

- My personal biggest concern is the unknown... specifically what disruptions may occur in the international transport of goods. To be completely honest I, as a vendor, am feeling shy about making big orders right now. We are supposed to be doing a sizable harvest at the end of March and I am sitting here right now wondering if I should go ahead and pay for it. The reality is that it can sometimes take anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months to receive an international shipment kratom shipment. With how fast things are changing I am personally hesitant to invest in large shipments for fear that I may never receive them. Something that vendors are keenly aware of in the kratom industry is that kratom shipments have a tendency to just "disappear" into thin air. When packages disappear, there is little recourse for you unless you know the right people or have some seriously bullet-proof relationships (vendors are always given "delivery guarantees" but those usually amount to nothing more than words in an email.... good luck complaining to customer service about it  ). This is all a real cost of doing business in the kratom world, and it's a cost that frequently puts vendors out of business. Depending on your situation, losing a really large shipment can cost you the last 3-4 months of profit. If you can imagine the devastation you would experience if suddenly the bank lost the last 6 months of your paychecks and there was nothing you could do about it. The devastation you would experience is the same for vendors, as most of us dont have millions of dollars to just fall back on and say "oh well, it was worth a try". For that reason, I think many vendors, especially the smaller vendors, might begin importing very cautiously and asking themselves if maybe right now is a good time to take a break. Coincidentally, for reasons not relating to Covid-19, TFH loaded up on product over the past several months. We are sitting insanely HEAVY on inventory, so we are not under any real pressure to re-supply for a loooong time. With that said, I am very interested in hearing from other vendors on this. Are you going to go ahead and re-supply as usual?

- Another thing crossing my mind is mail delivery. I read through the CDC's disaster planning it which touches on the need to protect the operation of our government's "critical infrastructure". Technically, the USPS falls into that category, but I have to wonder exactly what that means. Is it possible that they limit all non-essential mail/package deliveries? Of all of the possibilities I listed, I think this is probably one of the later stages that could be relevant. I dont think we are anywhere near this kind of scenario, but what in the world do I know? Again, if there is anyone with some "inside information" on what that looks like I would love to hear from you. Maybe postal workers have some insights they could share?

To summarize - I dont think now is the time for panic buying, but I do think the situation warrants everyone to keep their pulse on things.
Ultimately everyone has to make that decision for themselves and I dont blame or judge anyone who wants to protect their interests now. Last night they just confirmed the first case in North Texas, and I have to admit it triggered me to make a run to the grocery store to get some essentials. Unfortunately for me, it was a wasted trip... the shelves for anything "virus prep-related" were empty. Now I realize that if I went up there tomorrow they would probably be re-stocked, but I think that feeling of "missing the boat" on getting supplies for my family kind of disturbed me and has inspired me to share here. I care about everyone in this community and want everyone to play it smart. Again, I dont think now is the time to start stressing your bank account with kratom purchases, but if we start to see a sudden and sharp increase in US Covid-19 cases, as a consumer I would consider possibly putting a kg or two away in case we run into "our darkest hour".

Just dont go crazy as I did in 2013 and end up with an entire "kratom closet".

wOw you bought into a panic way back in 2013 ?? What about the 2016 DEA ban .. Prices were still very high then! We def experienced a full blown panic in Nov 2017, remember a year after that DEA scare.. All U.S. online vendors got completely wiped out, it took 2 weeks but the popular guys like SoCal, got cleaned out within three days. And SoCal had a huge stock. That WAS an absolute frenzy... However in 2017, Most online vendors were still taking credit cards!! That made stuff GO really, really, fast... Now using P2P payments - that could never happen. Very few vendors NOW, have instant Shopping Cart orders.

Funny, (Humor always helps in hard times!), I did check a Home Depot around 2 weeks ago for N95 Respirator masks. Just curious.. I looked online, appeared they were all gone but as I was driving by anyway.. Walked in, the guy immediately says "Can I help you", then laughed when I said N95? He's like... Those were ALL sold out, two weeks before that even. So around 1st week in Feb - all masks gone. Now.. people need "something" right? They gotta panic BUY something - so last week it's all the Clorox wipes. All... gone. Wiped off the shelf

Did you read that VICE Article from a couple weeks ago? Pretty well researched... I think his main point is correct: "The truth is, as long as everyone is talking and there’s plenty of supplies to go around, the world can ride out a new virus or disease until scientists develop a vaccine or the infection recedes. We’ve done it before, dozens of times." -- LINK: What a Pandemic in America Might Look Like

Yes, the late 2012 / early 2013 scare was the worst I ever saw... you couldn't find kratom anywhere. Barely-crushed leaf from no-name vendors was going for $500+ a kg at one point. I regretfully bought a couple of those which I eventually just threw away (terrible quality and I got tired of grinding the leaves myself). It was the real-deal... nobody had kratom. I dont think that will ever happen again though - it was just a different era. Thankfully, times have changed along with competitive pricing ;)

They just confirmed 9 cases in Ashland, the next town over, where we happen to be doing a huge concrete job. Yay! I don't take this very seriously, but I know the populous as a whole, especially around there, is jumpy to say the least. My boss was talking today about how we shouldn't panic but still PREPARE, which I intend to do this weekend. Next thing you know, my whole city could be shut down and there will be nothing except what you have gathered by that point. Nerve wracking. I'm pretty sure we are being misled by the media, but WHICH WAY? Are they underplaying or overplaying the situation? That's pretty important. My TFH came in today and I have about 1/4 of a metric s**t ton as hippie is wanton to say, so FOR A LITTLE WHILE, I'm good to go and can spend my liquid resources on the things I need besides. I didn't really have the money to get what I got but FOR SURE no regrets. Or regerts... Who can even speculate how this will pan out and honestly as long as my daughter is fine, I'm happy even if I dont make it. It seems the media wants everyone in panic mode and afraid of their neighbor. I have a decently strong immune system and am of at least moderate health, so if I get sick, i can likely fight it off as long as these day shift then night shift then day shift then night shift hours at work stop and i stop being tired all the time. Sixteen hours a day three days a week is draining for a 45 year old concrete guy like me. The good part is that my boss told me today that I'm in it for the long haul and I MAY even be getting a new work truck eventually. Haha! I digress....Thanks Chris for both your level-headed and intelligent insights and that Jade Bali! Wowie Zowie!

I believe 100% Corona crap is over sized for for a reason. Everyone knows it takes 2 weeks to spread the virus everywhere around the world. A lot think now this is a plot to scare people, when people in fear its very easy to control them, at the same time play the cards getting rid of trump since nothing else worked i am convinced this will work. But just in case if they become stupid they will quarantine you for no good reason and blame it all on virus so they can do their financial change and other stuff. Work in progress while people in fear stocking up. By all means do so because no one wants to be caught empty handed if they say you have to stay in a house for a long time. Some friend said their is an article how kratom has a molecule that combats coronavirus, once i get that and come back from work i will be sure to post it, that can explain why we barley get sick or some just don't.

Edit: Ah never mind, found the article https://www.naturalnews.com/2020-03-11- ... ounds.html enjoy.

As someone with an immunocompromised system who uses kratom throughout the day to combat chronic pain, I still get sick. Kratom maybe strengthens the immune systems of normal people, but nothing about my disease is normal.

As we have heard ad nauseam, 80% of people will be just fine. I am of the 20% that will not be fine. I know this guy who works at home depot and someone had pre-ordered mass quantities of the N95 masks, as in ALL OF THEM, cases of the stuff, to sell on eBay. It was a managerial decision, but people are really profiting off other people's fear.

I am just trying to be super cautious. We don't know anything about how this thing works, so I owe it to my partner (who has autoimmune diseases, several of them) as well as myself, to take all precautions. This includes purchasing from any vendor, God forbid, who catches this thing. We don't have enough testing kits here to really get a sense of the actual numbers, or gain an understanding about, for example, the woman from California who contracted this thing from thin air. I live in NY and the governor has declared a state of emergency. If I were a vendor, I wouldn't suggest anyone buy from me. It's too much of a risk.

No panic buying here. There is nothing to buy. Where I am from, masks are gone, and sold out: hand sanitizer, antibacterial hand soap and now, straight up alcohol. My pharmacy actually suggested I buy booze to use for hand sanitizer. This whole thing is nutballs, but I worry as a 'person that is immunocompromised and has an underlying illness'.

Well I went to pick up a few things today, normal grocery shopping not panic shopping, and it scared me how much is sold out. Corona virus hasn't even made it to where I am yet; and it's getting tough to find toilet paper, Clorox wipes, etc.

Then I got an email from Sam's club talking about being out of stock on a lot of things and that they were trying to restock and working on their procedures to stay clean for customer safety.

The WHO announced that coronavirus is now a pandemic

I dont know what is going to happen, and personally I hope this thing blows over soon and that everything was just blown way out of proportion. But I ordered quite a bit of Kratom today, and I'm working on getting a stock of supplies to put back just in case

Appears that employees of Home Depot, Lowes, stores hoarded the N95 respirators (they normally sell for $3 each) and now, search Amazon they are selling 1 for $15 .. from private sellers  Good ole' American Capitalism right? Oh but we can't have terrible "Socialism", No! Can't have the Government doing anything to help people... 30 million with NO health insurance?

So all these Goverment Haters elected the Rump, and he fired people at CDC, and cut their budget. NOW we find out, he's delayed Testing Kits they should have gotten 3 months ago.. Congress gave him $8 Billion last week for coronavirus.. it's been five days, has he done anything yet ?? How Many people will DIE because of Rump? That's like asking, how many died because of Bush over Gore. We know for sure, Al Gore never would have invaded Irag - So the answer is, millions? Millions of people died over the past 20 years because of that Election?

I guess we could blame the 5000 stupid folks in Florida, who voted for Ralph Nader in 2000. Those votes should have gone to Gore. But... Elections have Consequences and / War in Irag cost millions of lives.. back to 2020. How many hospital beds in America? They just said around 1 Million beds total in the USA. Doing the math.... well, we're gonna need a LOT more hospital beds. When those Testing kits finally get here :|

Yep. Isopropyl Alcohol works just fine.. otherwise, buy a fifth of Everclear. Or the cheapest Grain Alcohol similar to Everclear. Around here.. they cleaned out all the wipes, pads, soap... Now it's the toilet paper. Stores are being wiped out of toilet paper. No pun intended. 8-)

Breaking news. A few minutes ago, Rudy Gobert was tested & he's infected.. so all NBA games are called off.. Schools closed. Lets hope grocery stores stay open? How about the employees ?? Oh well. Thanks for listening to my rant. Gonna be a rough few months. Keep us posted, at least let's keep talking, misery loves company. :geek:

Hey if you need any food supplies without leaving your house Walmart has, 2 day shipping free on orders over $35 and maybe there still some decent food left on Amazon prime, although many things out of stock it seems.

Hey if you need any food supplies without leaving your house Walmart has, 2 day shipping free on orders over $35 and maybe there still some decent food left on Amazon prime, although many things out of stock it seems.

Thanks for this suggestion! I actually never knew this, but Walmart offers its own version of a "prime subscription" in that for $98/year you can get unlimited same/next day delivery of groceries on purchases over $35. Your post inspired me to look into an order and we went ahead and signed up for the service. Now seems like the time to do so.

Things are progressing so rapidly, but how South Korea is handling it is hopeful. In case anyone is interested, I found a youtube channel that is hosted by a doctor that gives a really great breakdown of all things COVID 19. Ill share one episode that I found especially informative, which went into detail how exactly COVID 19 kills, and what are the medical interventions that can be done to mitigate most of the danger. The reality is if you can get proper medical care (not just meds - actual treatments via respirator, etc), then even the most vulnerable have a low mortality rate. However, it has been explained that once the healthcare system is overwhelmed - that mortality rate is going to skyrocket. Basically, some %15 of people will require medical intervention - and many of those may not make it without it.

Great move Gumbyke1, rather be on the safe side for sure. I also learned there are same day delivery apps for a huge variety of stores, they are called Instacart and Shipt. If anyone is more vulnerable you can use these services and ask the employee to just leave your stuff at the front door and you can pick it up a bit later after they leave, maybe even disinfect the products with some kind of spray or wipes.

Schools closing in Jakarta as number of Covid cases increase in Indonesia.
https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/as ... s-12538372
While most cases have been clustered in Jakarta, cases were also reported in cities in western and central Java, Manado on Sulawesi island and Pontianak on Borneo island.
Good to see they're being proactive. Saw quite a few other articles referencing government measures taken to keep everything running smoothly in Indonesia.

I'm not too concerned, but I am picking up a little extra every order.

I just read an article about this kind of profiteering. Amazon and eBay, among other on-line retailers, are finally cracking down on it. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/14/tech ... e=Homepage

Honestly I understand making a buck, but those people are terrible. Its because of people like that that I cant get Clorox wipes or hand sanitizer. I have a baby, I need those things for daily life but cant get them because of some assholes profiteering on the pandemic. I hope they are stuck with what they bought and have to take losses on all of it. I hate to be that way, but it's just ridiculous. Two bottles of purell for 80dollars, they should be ashamed.

Free Speech is not an 'unlimited' right, you cant yell Fire in a crowded theatre.. Free Markets also should NOT be 'unlimited'. There MUST be limits on Vulture Capitalism - when people are hurt, just so some greedy bastard can make a buck... I support most of Bernie Sanders' ideas, this Election Year. Unfortunately he's a few years ahead of his time!

Yesterday I was in Office Depot. They got a re-stock of Clorox wipes, people were grabbing 'em as soon as they hit the floor.. On my way out I was approached by two women, who were frantic "Do they have any toilet paper" ?? One said something about her baby.. I guess they'd just come from Target next door. All gone... By 4:30 pm Rush Hour on Friday, stores were jammed with people grabbing anything & everything - Checkout lines to back of store.. like 20 people, all with loaded carts. Full Blown Panic.

Check Amazon. I think they're taking re-stock orders for delivery in like 2 weeks on many items. :!:

Yes. Proper medical care. I heard yesterday an estimate of total # of Hospital beds, VS- prediction of how many people may require hospitalization... There's maybe a million beds, available, at any given time. Probably not enough. Each state is going to need a plan, to setup Quarantine rooms/ Beds for treatment.. Governor Jay Inslee, Washington State, is buying up large motels for this - https://www.foxbusiness.com/lifestyle/s ... tine-motel

It's encouraging that people are taking action. Possible this pandemic can run it's course over 2 months, with minimal casualties.. But I wouldn't wanna be living in a Red state.. those places where politicians have banned kratom, but won't vote budget to help people. Question: How about the folks with NO health insurance, homeless, etc ? They'll be taking those hospital beds, too.

This is why the administration (and everyone else) needs to listen when Bernie Sanders said "We are ALL only as safe as the least insured person in this country." Because, of course, these are the people who will go without testing and treatment and they will spread this horror without meaning to. The One Percenters and the comfortable middle classes have NEVER had a problem with "natural selection" wiping out whole populations in this country. It's nightmarishly Dickensian.

My two biggest concerns with kratom supply are as follows:

1. As we all know, the elderly, folks with underlying health conditions and smokers are the greatest risk of mortality with Covid-19. If you watch a couple of Youtube videos on how the virus kills, its very easy to understand why smokers are among one of the greatest at risk. This is a big problem for Indonesia, as 62% of adult males are smokers in Indonesia... I would venture that number is even higher in the rural communities which are the heart of the kratom industry.

2. Global shipping is a complete disaster now. The demand for goods has gone up, while the capacity to ship goods has declined significantly.

Thanks for "bringing me around," Gumbyke.

I just realized that I should NOT have posted this comment here. Your post was specifically about the kratom industry and how it is being affected by the coronavirus. My comment doesn't really belong here. I'm going to move it to "Off Topic" and ask the mods that it be deleted because I don't think that I am adding to the discussion. In fact, it probably distracts from the primary concerns being discussed here. My apologies. I got caught up in the dialogue here and forgot that I was "in the wrong lane"

Your second point just sent a cold chill through me. I would really like to know more about this or where I can go to learn more. Seriously, I just looked at My Guy and said "You know near the end of the American Civil War when the South was basically being starved into submission because they couldn't get supply shipments? Well, I have a terrible feeling we are ALL going to feel like Georgians pretty soon  "

I’ve gotta say, reading your comments from last Sunday feels like a lifetime ago. If you guys could only imagine I’d be writing this today under full curfew while across the country the entire city of San Francisco would be locked down. I feel for people like Gumby who have to make serious financial decisions that are going to impact the Kratom community in the next few days.

I’m not sure how I can help, but if anyone is struggling (with Kratom or something else) please feel free to reach out.

I'd like to suggest posting anything about coronavirus/Covid-19 and the situation NOT directly related to kratom in the coronavirus thread. Thanks!

My personal biggest concern is the unknown... specifically what disruptions may occur in the international transport of goods. When packages disappear, there is little recourse for you unless you know the right people or have some seriously bullet-proof relationships (vendors are always given "delivery guarantees" but those usually amount to nothing more than words in an email.... good luck complaining to customer service about it  )
This does sound like a serious dilemma, and since you are speaking from experience, none of us can know better than yourself.

I do have a question, and it may sound very naive: Would it be possible for you to go to Indonesia and personally over-see deliveries yourself? I don't know how the whole system works. If you could be there yourself, might that ensure that your purchases make their way to your location safely?

Well I've been following the coronavirus news, and paying close attention to what people are saying here and on the MeWe groups( thanks to everyone who talked me into signing up). I have really been paying attention to this thread, and I think I'm stocked up good enough now to survive what may come. I hope it all blows over I do, but every day that goes by makes it seem less and less likely.
