When Freezing for Red Bubble...

For those of you who do the red bubble thing, I must know... what kind of container do you use when you freeze it?

I ask because this morning I went to take a cup out of the freezer and discovered that my ceramic coffee mug had cracked in half. This is the second time this has happened to me in as many months and I'd rather not sacrifice any further mugs if I can avoid it!

I was thinking of trying those freezer-safe plastic deli containers next, but I figured I'd ask what the rest of you are using before I go ahead and make a purchase.

During my few weeks of this approach, small ball jars (quarter pint sized) worked just fine. But suppose that’s probably at risk too being glass and just got lucky?

I just use plastic Tupperware or a normal plastic (not the disposable kind) drinking cup.

You can also use an ice cube tray to make a bunch of batches at once.

Are you cooling down completely before freezing ? If it’s going in the freezer hot that could be causing the breakage, I’ve used glass mason jars and ceramic mugs , the smaller the diameter of the mug I notice the more bubble action I get (depending on batch size)

I know some people that let it sit out overnight. (Definitely not necessary, but I think I did at least a half hour to hour at room temp and I use 170-180 degree water there are many different methods from some great users on here. Just make sure if youre trying something different I would change one variable at a time. If you change too much you won’t find what’s actually needed to produce the results your trying for.

If you’re boiling it pouring it directly in cup then to freezer, I could almost guarantee that’s part of it.

Hope that helps a bit I’m by no means master of tea making, but I’ve read so many of the greats methods , and tried a few of them (and I have a science background). There are definitely some great members on here they could offer better advice. I would hunt down a few of the best methods you can find look at what each does different and if you are willing enough try the ones you want

No, No, No! Glass jars can break in freezer... and plastic or silicone, usually isn't hard enough. The goal of freezing is, Cell Lysis to CRUSH your powder, can't do that in a floppy plastic cup!

Think about that. A "Cycle of freezing and thawing to disrupt cells through ice crystal formation", IS the definition here... Ice crystals expand. . Where do they expand TO ?? Well, depends what kind of container they're IN - right? IF it's a floppy plastic container, or like a plate or a dish... the Ice expands sideways. Path of least resistance. So, you'll get ice crystals but... NO bubble, if the bubble is going side-ways.

OK what's the opposite of that ?? Up! You want the bubble to go Up! so --> common sense, you'd use a skinny narrow coffee cup. Not a fat wide cup. I've been doing Red Bubble for 2+ years, it's a daily routine. Easy ~ Prep your powder 1-2-3. (Never ever pour dry powder down your throat). You wanna: 1- Pour boiled water over your powder, 2- Add some acid, (citric or acetic) Stir, cover and allow to cool completely. 3- Put that coffee cup in the freezer overnight. I have NEVER, had even one break in > two years of daily freezing.

Doing that I almost always get a nice Red Bubble!! . You thaw it out, add some flavoring & extras (Vitamin C and Magnesium) and... Wah Lah. Red Bubble Tea... now, you've got liquid kratom and you can mix drinks. You can "decant" off the top, and leave sludge on bottom? Your choice... You can easily make 3- 5 servings at a time, and keep in fridge two days' worth. Always a nice cold Tea... more bio-available/ hits harder/ tastes better too.

It’s not the physical pressure of the ice freezing and smooshing cells, it’s ice crystals forming in cell walls, expanding, and causing the rupture (or lysis). That works just fine with a soft cup.

Okay, maybe I shouldn't risk the glass after all but I'm definitely going to try with hard plastic at least. And waiting a much longer time before actually sticking the cups in the freezer. I have a feeling that my mug-breakage problem might have been due to me putting them in while the stuff was still too warm.

Yeah a nice solid ceramic coffee mug with a smaller diameter has given me the best “bubble” and I’ve broken a mason jar, after the process just tapping the spoon along the rim, exposing it to the heat and cold must weaken it, so yeah solid choice to go with ceramic or something that can withstand high and low heats.

I wonder... have you considered extracting the alkaloids for this with a sonicator instead of using the freeze method? The following video shows what appears to be a quicker method, maybe even more effective. The guy in the video goes much further to isolate the alkaloids, which is completely unnecessary and overly complicated for what you're doing; but, he does end up with a nice translucent orange liquid upon filtering after sonication. Seems like a small ultrasonic bath at < $100 would be a worthy investment if it truly works and could skip the freeze. Thoughts?
