L-theanine for calming effect, recommend

Post by IndelibleDotInk »

200mg L-theanine produces a pleasant sense of calm. 400mg produces a headache.

Mixed with guayusa tea, which has caffeine and theobromine, there is a strong mood lift. I try to avoid drinking guayusa daily, as the mood boosting effects are strongest if you drink it every other day, but the L-theanine can be taken daily.

I haven’t looked into it super seriously, but I’ve been intrigued by it when i heard mentioned it can help with sleep. I work very, very late night shifts, and while I don’t have a problem falling asleep when I get home....there is a bit of an issue staying asleep. I certainly don’t want any “sleep aids” per se, as I don’t want that hungover feeling when I have to get up and return to work.

Any notice you’ve had of it helping with sleep?

I've only taken it during the day, and it did not produce a 'gotta go to bed' or 'a nap would be nice' feeling. It wouldn't be hard falling asleep, though, with the calming influence.

So I picked up a bottle of 100mg capsules while I was at the store today. And I just gotta say, this stuff is LEGIT!!

I took one capsule shortly after we got home this afternoon. It’s hard to explain, but it basically calms the constant chatter in your brain down to a barely perceptible whisper. Which in turn allows you to focus on whatever task you have at hand. (In my case it happened to be yard work, but Hot Damn! we killed it).

And while it doesn’t make you drowsy, I can understand now how it could aid in sleep just by getting your head to shut up for a time being.

Thanks for the recommendation!

I take 200mg daily and have found that it works good for my anxiety and helps me be able to relax and sleep better as well.

I got some Nutricost powder after reading this and some comments on Reddit. Not really sure how much it helps though. The powder comes to under 3 cents per 200 mg if anyone is interested, and the brand is supposed to be reputable.

The effect from L-Theanine is very minimal IMO. But it's good for daily use. I think it's fantastic in combinations of 2:1 with l-theanine:caffeine, but on its own its kind of mild. Not very good for an actual anxiety disorder imo.

I guess there's no magic bullet on supplements for anxiety. Prescription MAOI's (Maoi A+B Parnate or Nardil)work great for a lot of people but most doctors don't like to prescribe.

MAOI's come with a host of contraindicated foods, possibly deadly.

Food interactions are exaggerated. Interactions with other medications are a bigger risk. Still cost / benefit depends on how much impact anxiety has on an individual.

Yes l- theanine is great! I like taking it with coffee/ another type of caffeinated drink, it usually helps a lot with shakey hands and that feeling of anxiety caffeine can sometimes give you.

What brand do you recommend? I'm thinking of picking some up on amazon since I gotta order some other stuff anyway. Might as well give it a try. :D

I've been using Nature's Trove from amazon. 200mg per capsule. I tried 400mg and it was too much, possibly got a headache from it. I really recommend the guayusa tea with it, or even on its own, very pronounced mood boost if you keep your tolerance low. Waykana brand from amazon (of course!) thanks to brave777.

I came across the below article which intrigued me and then ended up reading this post upon logging in tonight which had me placing your two recommended products into my Amazon basket! Lol ….. teas are somewhat newer to me and was unsure if guayusa is same as #10 from the article’s list?
Does anyone have experiences with these suggested alternatives(besides the obv kava as I know there’s a thread for that alone)?

Guarana is diff than guayusa.

Fused Flora sells javanica, hirsuta, akuamma, sometimes kanna.

Never heard of Chuchuhuasi.

I make about 2 8oz cups of guayusa at a time, strong, 2 teaspoons of leaf per cup, steep 5-7 minutes, pour over a mug full of ice. Very grassy and pleasant. Refill ice each time. If too bitter, reduce amount of leaf or add a dollup of real cream, it'll taste like drinking sweet bread cheese.

Let us know because I know Kava helps but we were wondering about this and a GABA supplement... Also a July 4th sales thread for Mitra would help.
Thanks...

I didn't have much luck with the cheapo "Swansons" brand capsules. I guess it made me a little more mellow/relaxed ? Mostly just tired sometimes, and often times I didn't notice it at all. Maybe the higher quality stuff works better, also - my metabolism or whatever, isn't very herb/vitamin/amino acids friendly, in that almost none of them do anything noticeable. Which is how I ended up getting into kratom, one of the few herbs that has any (positive) effect on me at all. All that to say, it was a fail for me, but I am maybe not the most 100% normal test subject ha-ha.

I really enjoy L Theanine. I’m a recovering benzodiazepine user of 14 years(hit 3 years clean last month) and 500mg really seems to take the edge off anxiety ridden moments. This is the brand I use and it seems superior to a lot of brands I’ve tried.

I grown my self fresh lemon grass, might last me 3 years. I been adding to tea's here and there with teaspoon of fresh raw honey. I add Lemon grass with Guayusa and sometimes with no honey at all because its sweet on its own and amazing taste, a pinch of fresh Peppermint makes it even more pleasant and takes care of upset stomachs especially if you eat out fast foods. If got any dirt around house you can buy 1 3$ pot of pepper mint plant. Over years it will spread on it own and grow more, i been giving mine away to random quests. So all you need is one plant, you can get it at lows or home depot bonnie brand.

Congrats on dropping the benzos!

500mg seems like a lot of theanine, most studies use 100mg doses, though some go up to 800mg daily dose for several weeks.

400mg consistently gives me headaches.

My gaba receptors are a bit used and abused. 200mg “works” per say but I get best results over 400mg.

The L-theanine just arrived in the mail today.

How do you space it out with the kratom? Say for example, if I take kratom at 5pm, would it be okay to take the L-theanine at like 2pm?

I try to take the theanine well before or after the kratom, as it's mild and would be overpowered by the burn.

It doesn’t interfere with burns for me personally. L Theanine is pretty mellow. Lowers my heart rate and produces a slight calm feeling. Nothing to intense and definitely doesn’t overpower leaf IMO.

I took 200mg last night at 12:30am with the intention of watching a movie, but by 1:15am while browsing through the selection of movies, I somehow fell asleep. Woke up at 5am as the sun was starting to come up. Now my sleep schedule is all messed up lol.

I don't know if it was the L or I was just tired, but either way - I fell asleep unintentionally last night.

I'm giving it another go now that I'm fully rested. Just took another 200mg and about to get on with my day.

Not sure if its been mentioned in this thread but L-Theanine should really be taken on an empty stomach for max absorption. Also look for brands that offer Suntheanine, its a pure form. Regular L-Theanine is still good and still works, but i prefer the Suntheanine version.

"Suntheanine is the trade name for Taiyo’s patented pure form of L-theanine. Suntheanine is not an extract of green tea but rather is produced via a patented process that mimics the natural process in green tea leaves, resulting in a 100% pure L-isomer-theanine."

How much is 200mg? I did get it and tried it with kratom, i know relaxing part is working 100%, i took 4 gram green that suppose to keep me going and here i am very relaxed. Ah i also took CBD. Extremely relaxed and somewhat high to the point it messes with my focus? Also felt lazy walking, does L-theanine make you very relaxed chill? I took 1/3 of a teaspoon. Maybe i need to take less next? I almost treated it like maca podwer but started less on edge of teaspoon. Good thing i didnt do full 2 grams. I need to buy some MG measuring spoons. Not going to lie thought, I did not know L-theanine is that strong.

1/3 of a teaspoon is about 600mg of L-Theanine, so that would be a pretty high dose. This is based on a true teaspoon used for cooking.

Thanks, i ll be carefull next time. I did feel like it was overwhelming for like 10 min, had to walk it off. I mean i liked the chill back effect. Down side to it that i dont like is, it removes all hunger, i mean all! Usually with any CBD i feel hungry but this time around i had to force myself to eat food. It was def a new experience with this supplement, didnt realize how powerful this supplement is. It has its own use for sure. For those 10 min i felt strange, unfocused and off balanced but was not bad. I always lean on TFH reds, any reds for any discomfort , even 2 grams solves most issue for me. TFH is always a life savior for me, if people only knew that any wd or discomfort, TFH reds wins hands down. Always gets me back and very balanced. I would even say TFH reds are perfect for panic attacks, anxiety, stress. I took it a while back ago when i was sick with some flu, and when i put a pause on all kratom that had edge, TFH reds was my go too and it helped amazingly. I can see how some people might feel panic attack or strange if they over take L-theanne. I am try 200 mg next time with no kratom, and see how it goes. Glad to have L-theanine in my collection , thanks Rhino.

Took 3 100mg capsules of All Star Vitamin's (https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07 ... UTF8&psc=1) L-theanine; seems 300mg is a good dose for me, definite relaxation and calm, meshing well with my coffee, focusing on breathing after a short walk in the neighborhood before I took the pills. Very pronounced effects, some mood lift as well.
