NIDA says kratom is safe - BIG news!

Post by e_poison »

The National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) has released their official statement that unadulterated kratom is safe and not a danger to public health. This is huge news. More information in the AKA press release posted below.

Source: https://www.americankratom.org/press-releases
WASHINGTON, DC – July 30, 2018 – In a recent update of its official position on the botanical kratom, the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) affirmed that, “Kratom by itself is not associated with fatal overdose,” explaining that only when the natural ingredient is contaminated or “laced with other compounds” has it been associated with deaths.

NIDA’s position clarifies and corrects an earlier statement by FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb that kratom has been associated with 44 deaths—sufficient, in his opinion, to justify placing the botanical on the Federal Drug Enforcement Agency’s (DEA) schedule that would prohibit kratom’s distribution and use, even in its pure form.

“NIDA’s position does not come as a surprise,” said Dave Herman, Chairman of the American Kratom Association (AKA), which is committed to protecting the rights of consumers who use kratom safely and successfully. “The data used by the FDA to make its original claim are clear that the adverse reactions were caused by adulterated or contaminated kratom, polydrug use, or unrelated underlying health conditions of the decedent. NIDA’s statement is consistent with these findings, and we call upon the two agencies to work together to remove the FDA’s scheduling recommendation for pure kratom and focus on protecting the rights of Americans who rely on it by removing adulterated and dangerous counterfeit products from the market.”

The FDA and NIDA have a long-standing formal agreement that both agencies must concur on scheduling recommendations submitted to the DEA. “In extrapolating the data to a faulty conclusion—in an effort to place kratom on the DEA’s schedule—the FDA’s logic would require the prohibition of caffeine and even coffee because someone laced that drug with fen-phen or any other contaminant. In fact, it could be applied to anything, even broccoli, once it has been contaminated with a dangerous substance.”

NIDA’s position clarifies that natural kratom does not present a public health risk, and the FDA already has statutory authority to seize all dangerous adulterated and counterfeit products. “The American Kratom Association joins the millions of consumers who safely use kratom, as well as the healthcare professionals and government leaders who support kratom in its pure form, in calling upon the FDA to follow the science, to allow consumer access to the natural botanical, and to use its efforts and energy to go after those who lace it illegally,” said Herman. “We respectfully request that acting DEA Administrator Uttam Dhillon formally reject the FDA recommendation for the scheduling of kratom and return it to the FDA for immediate regulatory action against adulterated counterfeit kratom products. This may require a little more effort on behalf of the FDA, but it is consistent with the science. It is the right thing to do. And it will put to an end the threat of criminalizing millions of Americans who rely on kratom for their health and well-being.”

The AKA announced its recommended standards for kratom manufacturers and vendors on July 18, 2018 to promote self-regulation in the kratom industry so that consumers could identify vendors who comply with FDA good manufacturing processes.

This is HUGE news, It will be interesting to see if the news agencies are as quick to pick this story up as fast as the one that was picked up in February about the 'computer model'

This is the biggest news in a long time, I'm surprised more people aren't talking about it. Usually when drugs are recommended for scheduling, NIDA and the FDA work together to consult the DEA. NIDA is saying it's completely safe and the FDA was mistaken. If my understanding is correct, it's not going to be scheduled anytime soon, if ever. Although we might be heading towards regulation with the AKA's latest news, but that's a topic for another day.

It seems that the mainstream media is not reporting it either, maybe because it's not negative news...

There seems to be quite a bit of controversy over this, see the updated AKA announcement and reddit posts. The NIDA released a statement backtracking, so the AKA made another announcement providing their justification for their update: https://www.americankratom.org/press-releases

This feels like dangerous ground. My kid does the same thing... exaggerates things daddy says to convince mommy to give him what he wants... only in the end both parents end up being mad at him.

It sounds like the AKA is concerned that the NIDA is adopting opinions from the FDA that directly oppose scientific evidence as well as their own.

There is no telling how this will end.

I agree with your assessment. Look at the history, trends, and politics .. Kratom will NOT be banned or scheduled. :o

However IF that's the case.. it has ramifications for many groups, involved in this "kratom industry". One BIG group in terms of $.. the head-shop "Legal High" drug pushers who contribute big bucks to AKA, so they may continue selling their K-Shots and O.P.M.S. bullshit at huge markups .. Also notice the recent NIDA and AKA discussion on safety of plain leaf kratom, VS- other forms of kratom pills spiked or adulterated. The stuff you buy in head shops.

IF kratom winds up being "Legal but Regulated", the head-shop ripoffs stand the most to lose .. All those gas stations and convenience stores will no longer be stocking jars full of funny kratom pills !! Good riddance I say, as long as raw, bulk, powder kratom is still available, for my Green Alkaloid Smoothie :D

So AKA is kind of stuck, because their biggest donors are NOT online stores like Herbal RVA .. it's the Florida pill makers, kratom millionaires like Sebastian Guthery and his buddies who started AKA, and provide the big $.. Also the many big vendors who bankroll - Don't be surprised if AKA promotes another "panic" very soon... Gotta crank up those vendor sales!! and Donations! :ugeek:

Yes, donating to AKA is a good thing. So... maybe another paranoid "panic" is necessary ??

If Kratom's name is eventually cleared and there is no chance of it being scheduled I wonder what role the AKA would assume?

So this whole thing has gotten kind of messy and confusing.

It looks like the AKA jumped the gun with the press release claiming that NIDA says kratom is safe.

They released this statement because the NIDA fact sheet was updated but they never actually contacted an NIDA spokesperson to confirm whether this was their stance.

NIDA responded saying that the AKA report is false: https://i.imgur.com/OawIG6S.png and https://imgur.com/a/TmffUNX

NIDA is not happy that the AKA dragged them into this and that the AKA said that the NIDA is contradicting the FDA.

Nick Wing via Twitter: "NIDA offers brutal response to American Kratom Association's "inaccurate" press release re: kratom overdose language.

NIDA: "We have pulled the overdose language on our fact sheet until our update is prepared, after consultation with the FDA and other relevant agencies." pic.twitter.com/zvk04jOwaV (https://twitter.com/nickpwing/status/10 ... 73/photo/1)

Instead of backing down, the AKA decided to double down and try to prove the NIDA wrong. They sent out this email: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ZAS ... 40t5xqafav and sent this letter to the Director of the NIDA: http://docs.wixstatic.com/ugd/9ba5da_a0 ... 44d64ef2d6

Other people explain this better than I can: https://www.reddit.com/r/kratom/comment ... l/#e3dry1l
