Odd Story in Bangkok Post

Post by acct55 »

I just saw an unusual story from Christmas in the Bangkok Post. Apparently some soldiers spotted four guys on motorcycles carrying suspicious bags and tried to pull them over.

The guys fled into the woods ditching both their cargo and motorcycles. The sacks were found to contain about 2000kg of fresh kratom leaves. At first I thought maybe they just got the numbers wrong, but the photos in the story show a very large quantity of bags, some of them with "30" written on them.

Very unusual for a few reasons: 1) kratom is legal in Thailand now (so why did they flee?), 2) the numbers don't check out... That would be roughly 500kg of bulky sacks per person/motorcycle... I've seen guys in Asia pile a lot of stuff on a bike--but 500kg of kratom leaves is kind of hard to believe.

Setting that aside though, since their cargo is legal I wonder if they ditched it because it was destined for Malaysia (where it's illegal), if it was stolen, if they were holding anything else that they fled with, or maybe they were just afraid of corrupt soldiers or something.

Very strange story all around.

Something is off with that article, 2,130 Kilos of Kratom Leaves, not even powder. That's roughly 4,600 pounds of leaves(Much Bulkier than powder) split between 4 motorcycles plus the weight of each driver?? Wonder what the real story was behind the "bust"
