Surgery and kratom
I am going to need to have a pretty decent knee surgery in the near future (date not yet set). I have searched the posts in here and a few other sites, and generally see recs for stopping 3-5 days prior to the surgery. I have no desire to share my kratom use with the doctors just cause I don’t want to deal with any possible repercussions (I am part of Kaiser so all my docs work from the same system), so I am working off the assumption that the 3-5 days will have it out of my system. Anyone have other thoughts or considerations?
The other piece is then managing pain after. I have had knee surgeries a long time ago and the pain was only super bad the day or two after. Are there considerations I need to take if I plan to pivot off the pain meds as soon as the most acute pain subsides?
Thank you!

Really depends on IF you're abusing kratom at huge gpd amounts, or enjoying moderate use... you didn't say.Daydreamsofmountains wrote: ↑Sat Feb 26, 2022 3:09 pm I am working off the assumption that the 3-5 days will have it out of my system. Anyone have other thoughts or considerations?
Everything gets complicated if you're over 10 gpd, or up around 30 gpd, with horrible side effects & withdrawals. IF that's you... Stop now!
IF you're moderate, below 10 gpd then just taper down a couple days. Big question, What are they giving you for knee surgery ? I had heart surgery with like one days notice, but I was completely under with general anaesthetic. Upon waking up in the hospital I did have mild kratom withdrawals, they gave me a Gabapentin and all was good... For knee surgery ? Isn't that just LOCAL anaesthesia, along with a benzo to keep you sleepy... correct? Should be no problem, they'll give you a benzo (Valium etc.) an hour before, then numb your leg. Don't combine kratom with opioid drugs. IF they're giving you an oral opioid for pain relief, make sure you have not taken any kratom within, like 48 hours... you should be fine.
Again we don't know your Medical History here. we're not doctors!! Answer could be different based on your Tolerance, your kratom gpd, your benzo history, etc etc.

Thanks! I take 4 grams per day max - 1.3 per dose, 2-3 doses per day, and I use Hirsuta and stem and vein for a few doses every week. Who knows what they will give me
but this is helpful

Re: Surgery and kratom
I've had two surgeries in the past six months or so, both with general anesthesia rather than just local, and both gave me opioid painkillers post-surgery, so I can give you my experiences and hope they're helpful or provide some peace of mind at least. for the emergency surgery I had no heads-up to be able to stop kratom ahead of time at all, and it had no impact on the anesthesia at all. the second go 'round, for the more minor surgery, I stopped seven days ahead of time and there was no real difference there, either. no problems at all.
as for whatever they give you for pain management after, if they do give you opioids, I wouldn't take kratom on the same day that you've taken those. for both of my recent surgeries, the day after stopping proper painkillers I went back to my normal kratom schedule and it worked fine. I don't think I even waited a full 24 hours, let alone 48. no issues there either, at least not for me. but I've heard people say that opioid painkillers messed with the efficacy of their kratom, so you may want to wait just to be sure. worst case scenario, the kratom just doesn't hit for you the way it usually does. do whatever you feel comfortable with.
I've seen it said that kratom won't show up on blood/urine tests unless they're specifically testing for that, so if you're worried about it showing up in test results, I wouldn't be concerned on that front. good luck with your surgery, whenever you have it!

Thank you so much! I really appreciate the insight into your experiences. I know we are all different but having some idea of others’ experiences is helpful in deciding the path for me. It will be general and I am not sure about what they will prescribe for after but do plan to ask. Have a good eveningSanbutsushin wrote: ↑Sun Feb 27, 2022 5:12 pm I've had two surgeries in the past six months or so, both with general anesthesia rather than just local, and both gave me opioid painkillers post-surgery, so I can give you my experiences and hope they're helpful or provide some peace of mind at least. for the emergency surgery I had no heads-up to be able to stop kratom ahead of time at all, and it had no impact on the anesthesia at all. the second go 'round, for the more minor surgery, I stopped seven days ahead of time and there was no real difference there, either. no problems at all.
