Tech Folks: Help With Home Surveillance Camera?
Hi Everyone,
During a big snow storm, someone hit my car and took off. I'm in a new neighborhood and kind of shy. I don't mind going around asking neighbors if they have camera footage, but I have no idea how you get the footage if there is any. Do you download it onto a flash drive, or something else? I've been using computers for decades but I don't know anything about this stuff. I figure I'm going to have to learn, since I should get a home camera myself.
Any techies out there with some advice? I'd be so grateful. Thanks.
Correction: I should have written "My Guy's car." When someone hits mine I will turn into a storm!

I have Ring for my front door, and then I set up Tapo cameras (surprisingly cheap but high quality, and they also have night vision) around the exterior of my home. Both are very easy to set up and if anyone sets foot on my porch or in my yard, I immediately get a notification on my phone and can view the live feed and record footage on-demand even without a subscription. The Tapo cams also have very loud alarms on them which you can set to blast if they detect any motion. It’s extremely important to have home security these days. If you have any questions, feel free to ask!Greyfeather wrote: ↑Tue Jan 07, 2025 8:16 pm Hi Everyone,

If your neighbors have footage of the crash, it’s most likely stored on the cloud so they could easily email you the clip. Depending on their subscription plan, saved footage is normally only stored on the cloud for a limited time and then auto-deleted to make room for new footage, so it’s best to ask them as soon as you can.

Thank you, e-poison. This is such helpful information. We really do need to get a system. Kids have gone wild in this city. At my old address they smashed the rear window out of the little Kia twice and now Kias and Huyndais are stolen every night of the week. I'm in the Midwest and those tiktok challenges take a while to come out our way, but once they do it's all Hell-a-poppin'. Poor kids are bored out of their minds and frustrated so I don't get mad.e_poison wrote: ↑Fri Jan 10, 2025 5:27 amI have Ring for my front door, and then I set up Tapo cameras (surprisingly cheap but high quality, and they also have night vision) around the exterior of my home. I'll talk to my guy about setting something up and I'll be sure to take you up on your offer if we can't figure it out.
Thanks so much for your help and I'm so glad to see Double M doing so great

Correction: I should have written "My Guy's car." When someone hits mine I will turn into a storm!. We live on a narrow little street, though, so I'm keeping an eye on it. We think a snow plow might have clpped the other car.
