Ethanol
Hi guys!
I have a question:
Is the ethanol in tinctures purchased online safe to drink? I've read conflicting statements about this.

Re: Ethanol
Hi,
i´ve never tried those tinctures, but i´ll suppose anything sold for human consumption (and these tinctures aren´t sold as "incense", right ?) should be
based on drinking ethanol, not some denatured alcohol. If you think your vendor is reputable, it shouldn´t be an issue. However, i don´t believe these tinctures are to be "drinked" per se, but used as drops sublingually, perhaps ?
Note that all kratom extracts are overpriced, their effects are even less researched than plain leaf´s, and it WILL raise your tolerance to the point you won´t
feel any effects from plain leaf. Extracts aren´t really something to recommend, IMHO.
Please do your research before purchase.
Cheers

Re: Ethanol
Thanks for your response. I've been using kratom for 2 years and have stayed away from extracts because, like you said, it raises tolerance. Lately I've been dabbling in them a little to find something compact I can take with me on vacation and avoid carrying bags everywhere. All kratom products are marked "not for human consumption" so I was a little worried not knowing how much of the ethanol is safe to consume.Mythra Gina wrote:Hi,

Mo Botanicals has a good tincture but WOW the alcohol taste is STRONG! It's not too bad if it's mixed in with tea or something.

I would make my own if I had to use them, vodka and lemon.MetalMamaRocks wrote:Thanks for your response. Re: Ethanol
I use 100 proof vodka or Everclear to make tinctures, depending on the herb I'm using.

Re: Ethanol
How do you make it? Just let the powder soak in the alcohol for a while?

Have not tried tincturing kratom yet, but I'd do it with crushed leaf if I did and use 100 proof vodka.

Which, by the way, is never supposed to be imbibed by itself. I know Everclear used to put that on their bottles. I don't know if they still do, however.herbalhippie wrote:I use 100 proof vodka or Everclear to make tinctures, depending on the herb I'm using.

Re: Ethanol
Generally, Kratom and other herbs, contain different alkaloids, some are soluble in polar solvents, some in nonpolar solvents. Kratom alkaloids, being lots of them in there, need both polar/nonpolar solvents to get kinda "full spectrum" extract. I have seen methods somewhere, can´t remember where, as i am not interested in making any .MetalMamaRocks wrote:How do you make it? Just let the powder soak in the alcohol for a while?
But Erowid.org has most of these informations, i suggest you read their articles on Kratom.

All the tinctures I make are for topical use in the pain rubs I make anyway, but I did not know that! Makes sense though, I can't imagine it would leave the lining of your throat and stomach in very good shape.

Re: Ethanol
In the past i used to be an "alchemist", making all kinds of extracts and whatnot. I do not recommend 100proof vodka, as its 50% ethanol 50% water, so if your going to nonpolar soluble alkaloids, it wont work well.
Everclear, on the other hand, is OK. I don´t use it (not in US), but i use its alternative available in EU, which is 80% pure grain (drinking) alcohol.
Its always better to use strong enough ethanol (more than 50% / 100proof), and to dilute resulting liquid if its intended for oral consumption.
But i personally don´t see a reason to make Kratom extract, provided without using proper solvents like diethylether (you can´t get this) and proper lab equipment, you always end up with rather impure extract, missing some alkaloids completely, and only getting some % of others. Just saying,
i understand some people can´t eat lots of raw leaf daily.

Do i understand it correctly, are you using Kratom tincture topically ? Didn´t know it is possibleherbalhippie wrote:All the tinctures I make are for topical use in the pain rubs I make anyway, but I did not know that! Re: Ethanol
No, I have not tinctured kratom or used it yet. I was referring to the other tinctures I make.
Although I might experiment with adding it to a topical balm at some point.

I would be tempted to try inserting a kratom balm rectally if it had a low/0herbalhippie wrote:No, I have not tinctured kratom or used it yet. I was referring to the other tinctures I make.

amount of toxic chemicals. Not sure I want to be the guinea pig on that though, maybe someone more experienced and adventurous *looks around for Ballzdeep* can go first! LOL
