The FDA is sounding the alarm on opioid substitutes

Food and Drug Administration officials say the next wave of drug abuse could involve opioid substitutes.
These substitutes include gabapentinoids, loperamide, benzodiazepines, and kratom.
"We must be aware that any decisive actions taken to reduce prescription opioid abuse and stem the tide of overdose and death can have unintended consequences, including prompting people to turn to alternative, potentially dangerous substances," the officials wrote in a recent letter published in The New England Journal of Medicine.

The FDA says it is able to get at the forefront of the latest trends in drug addiction by sifting through internet forums and online mentions to detect concerning patterns.

I said this on Reddit but I'll say it again in here, it's funny that 3 of the 4 substances are currently "FDA approved". How can they "battle" drugs that they said are ok? Just adds to the hypocrisy that is the FDA.

FDA is a sad joke. But they are powerful. The proposed rescheduling of Kratom in 2016 was an incredible farce that would have hurt many people if it was carried out to its planned conclusion. And today's political climate is not about helping people besides the capitalists, if it ever was about anything else. Call me a cynic but I'm surprised big pharma hasn't moved in on our alkaloids big time. Ive heard it argued they won't isolate and market Kratom derivatives cause that could put a large handful of their other money makers out of business. I'm pretty naive about all this. Just tell me when to panic raise cash and hoard. Its just a matter of time.

Next wave? Hm, I must be really ahead of the times on all four of those, unfortunately.

Unfortunate. The FDA showed a lot of scruples in 2016 by holding hearings and listening to public comment and giving us a few months. I don't know if they are under that kind of constraint anymore. Anything goes in this administration. We need a "hoard meter" indicating the probability of the FDA rescheduling kratom. Watch for when all the vendors start reducing prices and getting rid of stock like there is no tomorrow. And then panic. Kratom keeps very well fortunately.

Do you mean THIS FDA?

Under the FDA's current rules, some cereals and snacks are deemed healthier than fruits and nuts based on fat content. Frosted Flakes (sugar, GMOs) are healthier than avocados.

Not to get political... BUT! :D Here comes the politics - Everything depends on this Midterm Election folks. Well at least "A Lot" of things and kratom is no exception. Hey I know this board isn't about politics. And I'm an Independent mostly. but let's be honest Trump has appointed some real jerks.. Scott Gottlieb is one of them.

Another way to look at it... Chuck Schumer announced recently: The Democrats are making "Legal Weed" part of THEIR platform. The Republicans? Same ol', guns and more guns. Illegal drugs. Illegal abortion. Big Government's Drug War!

So.... I really think kratom IS part of lots & lots of things that are waiting on this November.
