Re: What are your all time favorite songs?
Well, if you've got a few days, I'll tell you all my favorite songs.
Probably won't be tonight though, got some things going on. I'll post an easy one tonight.
This one is probably my all time favorite song. I don't know if it's because of what was going on in my
life right then. I was 15 and just really getting to know who I was becoming. This song reminds me of that time in my life.

Re: What are your all time favorite songs?
As I am an amateur musician/singer songwriter I have too many favorite songs to list as well. One of my all time favorite musicians is David Byrne from the talking heads. I just saw him for the 3rd time a couple weeks ago and he played -This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)- and I used to cover this song a lot so it made me very emotional. I’ve seen a lot of older musicians (a lot) and I have never seen a. 66 year old man in as good of shape as David Byrne. Robert plant was in great shape when I saw him(band of joy tour), bob weir(better than average, I’ve seen rat dog and further like 5xs) but David Byrne that guy can move for a 66 year old! I’m 26 and i guarante I could not keep up with his dance moves haha I have to think on my favorite led zep and favorite Grateful Dead song will add those later!

I have SO many my head hurts just trying to think of them all. There's not a band y'all mentioned that I don't hear regularly, and the late 60s - early 70s groove is the best. I like most anything from that era that is rock, blues or R&B, with a special love for psychedelic and progressive rock and the frequent foray into world music. Anything from Allman Bros to It's A Beautiful Day to Nick Drake to Pink Floyd to Gil Scott-Heron to ELP or King Crimson I'm there -- at least when I'm not listening to bossa nova or smoky jazz, that is.
Like I said... too many to list.

Neil young is my favorite of CSNY but the only one I haven’t seen live!! Helpless by Neil young is one of my all time favorite songs. I have been fortunate to see CSN, Stephen stills solo, Nash solo and even Crosby solo. Any of you guys see any of these legends back in the day? My aunt saw CSNY on the super coked our tour in 1974.

I think Stephen Stills is my favorite.
I was living in Los Altos, CA in 1983 and working in Menlo Park. An announcement came over the radio station that Neil Young was going to do a spur of the moment concert at this little bar in San Jose that night, play some songs off an album he was about to release. I didn't hear the announcement, but a few hours later a co-worker came to my desk and said her husband had gotten four tickets and they could only use two. Did I want the other two? Hell yes I did. So I got hold of my sister-in-law to be and we went and saw Neil Young that night. We had a table right next to the stage.
This was the album https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Everybody%27s_Rockin%27
I never have seen CSNY, just Neil.

I'm on a Facebook group where they post 4 albums, and people vote or comment, ranking the 4.
ONE stood out... the 1976 classical metal LP Rainbow Rising -- Ronnie James Dio, Cozy Powell, Richie Blackmore.
"Light In The Black" -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBYh0t36fT8

Herbal that is sick! Thanks for sharing the story, I think because I live in South Carolina Neil is the one I will never get to see, I’m not opposed to traveling for it but now he doesn’t tour as much and my chances are getting pretty low. I think i saw Stephen stills somewhere 2009-2013( boy are concerts more fun now that I don’t drink or use drugs!!) and man can he still play guitar!! He’s my second fave of the 4 for sure. When I saw CSN they said it was the 50th anniversary of the day they played Woodstock and they put on a hell of a show!

Speaking of world music, somehow I ended up explaining to my partner today that Rastafarians consider the late emperor of Ethiopia, Haile Selassie, to be god and that Bob Marley wrote hymns and songs about him:herbalhippie wrote:I love progressive rock and world music. <3
Selassie is the Chapel
War (lyrics are a speech Selassie delivered at the U.N. back in the day)
World music is -wild-, and never fails to fascinate and teach me. I couldn't really think of a single favorite, but this is one of them, never fails to put me in a better mood:

Here's one of my favorites. Afro-celtic.
Cotu - Baka Beyond
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSKdia4JWAU
I took the kids to see them in concert in a very small venue about a half hour from Seattle in the late-2000s. Never thought I'd get to see them, I was just very lucky to see the announcement of the concert somewhere by accident.

Re: What are your all time favorite songs?
Ohhh, yeah. And it's -that- particular version: Elis Regina performed it countless times, it's actually a protest song about what was going on in Brazil at the time, but with that particular performance the joy just -jumps- off the screen at you!herbalhippie wrote:Brazilian jazz! That was good!
A number of the great Brazilian performers/songwriters jumped back and forth between jazz and other styles regularly, they all knew each other and collaborated -- especially when they started to get banned in the 70s over their political protest content -- so it's very difficult even now to distinguish between Brazilian jazz and bossa nova, for example. Even their "pop" tunes have a lot of the same sounds, and that's still the case though most of the musicians from the bossa nova era are dead now.
Both of those Afro-celtic tunes were exactly the kind of thing I like, thanks! My partner listens to a lot of Afro Celt Sound System: very good but I have to be in the mood for it. A perennial favorite of mine is one from the movie Ali, a bit slower and darker:

I love seeing so much 70s prog rock mentioned in this thread. Yes and King Crimson are my two favorite bands. If anyone is up for prog and jazz -and some folk and electronic music - from the cold war-era eastern bloc nations, the Funked Up East channel on YouTube is worth checking out.

All time favorite is Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here.
John Lennon Imagine is a close second
One that means a lot to me - Shinedown Second Chance. Can't listen to it without tearing up.
Also really like Killswitch Engage My Curse. Starts out with a pretty guitar intro, then a primal scream, then some head banging music!

I love a lot of those early Eagle songs; they do have a certain sound and quality to them. I think my favorite Eagles song is I Can't Tell You Why. Maybe it's because I used to have a microwave that put out the exact same note that song starts on -- no lie! -- and always made me think of it.
But right now I'm listening to some old Blind Faith (with Eric Clapton): Can't Find My Way Home.

I knew that back when you said you dig Hildegard von Bingen. I mean, how often does THAT happen?whiffy, you are my soul twin.
But yeah, I dig most things Stevie Winwood, at least the older stuff: Small Faces, Traffic, Spencer Davis Group. Dude is -seriously- underappreciated.
And I love all those Eagle songs you just linked: their vocal harmony is -incredible- for a pop group. Sometimes it's so tight I can't actually pick out the separate parts, which is amazing and rare (to me, anyway).
Favorite Zeppelin tune is a tossup between The Rain Song and the kind of deep cut Ten Years Gone off Physical Graffiti. What's yours?
EDITED TO ADD: In other news, I had a friend who sang Byzantine chant whose wife's vacuum cleaner matched one of their frequent isons (the note that is sung and held while others sing the melody).

Very cool topic, esp just to read comments.
I’m a musician, so don’t get me started! Lol
Seriously, I love all good music. Mostly rock and blues stuff, but my tastes are very broad. I won’t list all the classic rock, but just say from AC/DC to ZZ Top, America to Zeppelin, Allman Brothers to Zappa, etc.
As far as current music, I really like Drive-by Truckers and a good bit of that sort of alt-country, Americana stuff. That seems to be where I hear the freshest music these days.
