Tips for a senior dog

Got Mei mei in Feb 2008, she was full sized but still a pup.

Long story of her becoming a service dog and guardian, loyal companion and friend, amazing athlete and hiker, but the takeaway is she's old now, lol, and she is very happy, but she has mobility issues. Her rear legs were paralyzed from nerve damage several years ago, but surgery and keeping her active allowed her enough ability to stand, walk, and even run again, although she can't do a sit, and her rear legs are often off balance. This interferes with her being able to lie down and stand up. Any suggestions if you have had a senior furry companion?

And/or other suggestions for any old dog issues?

Oh, look at that sweetie! Still a puppy at heart! Mei really does have a sweet face; I want to reach right through the screen and give her pat on the head and a boop on the nose.

It's been a long time since my old dog passed away but it broke my heart to lose her. The best advice I have is to make the most of every moment you have left with Mei. I still have regrets about my old girl's last few months because I had a newborn and didn't didn't manage to give her the attention she needed. There were so many times I could have taken her out for a walk or played with her or just given her a good brushing. Little things that would have made her happy as the end grew near. So that's my advice, treasure this time with Mei. That includes being very attuned to any changes in behavior that might signify something important. I know Mei has quite a few issues so you are already pretty attuned to her needs. I just wish I'd been more on top of things. But yeah, love her and treasure her and take lots and lots of pictures.

The picture of her and dead Shrek is old, prolly 6 yrs. She lost her interest with her toys mostly, but not in a depressed way. I loved watching her go to her large bowl where we kept her toys and pick out a specific toy, usually a Kong Wubba or tennis ball; seemed so human.

Yeah, since Max was put down last week, I am thinking of what I should do with Mei. I am really hoping she stays healthy as we move to a new house in the beginning of March. I am planning to put my mattress on the ground there so she can get on it if she wants. Currently it's on a platform and we had a ramp, but she started to want to sleep on her dog bed in the living room.

I’m kinda in the same boat with my Pomeranian Jack at the moment. He just turned 16. I remember when Jack used to shred stuffed animals too. He still has a lot of life in him. He does struggle to jump onto the couch or my sons bed where he loves to sleep in the sun. I try very hard to spend time with him every day and tell him I love him.

One thing I have considered lately is starting him on CBD drops. He doesn’t appear or act like he’s in any pain but I’m sure there are days he feels his age. I haven’t started him on anything yet but I’m definitely looking into it. Mei is beautiful and aging gracefully. Cherish today and the days ahead with her.
