Do you consider there to be red colored bents?

Post by AppalachianHerbs »

I have ordered from many indo vendors. And there seems to be a descrepency in what they consider a bent. The majority I would say carry something brown as a bent. But there are a few who insist that their dark red strains are bents.

Do you guys think that a bent can be dark red? What about a super fermented yellow style? If you ferment it enough can it be called a bentuangie? Or only if it is a true brown strain. At least light chocolate in shade.

Interested to hear everyones opinion. :) <3 :) <3 :)

Yes, I have several dark red bents.

The Indo supplier VLNT is famous for his Red Bentaungie.

I also have a yellow Bentaungie, also from VLNT.

I consider Bentaungie to be highly fermented "pure strains", in that they're not blends. I believe that most of these red colored reds, are simply blends containing varying amounts of bents in them. I can smell and definitely taste the Bentaungie in them.

Though bentaungie in Malaysian (their language) means fermented and a fermented green could be a green bentuangie, I only characterize a fermented red as a bent, regardless of what the indonesians call it, I try to characterize what suppliers based specifically on drying method and drying method only:
white - dried indoors
Green - dried outside after the wash (in shade) and then finished inside
red - dried outdoors

Now, when the indos put it into bags to ferment:
gold - green bagged for awhile to ferment indoors
yellow - white bagged to ferment indoors
bentuangie - red fermented outdoors

I don't do the red and green = whites or mixed golds/yellows from any Indonesian, so I can characterize them just like this based strictly on their drying method. Hence I only have a few golds and yellows now, as they're time consuming to bag and dry indoors and most suppliers don't like to do it.

Depending on how VLNT dries it it what I would/would not call it, but I wouldn't characterize anything as a green bent, yellow bent, etc... based on how I do it. Just too confusing to me and wouldn't lead to consistency IMHO.

I see a few Indo's are now selling a Black Bali.. come on. Is that possibly mixed with powdered black resin?

True Brown, not blended - is just leaf fermented TOO much. Over done.. left in the bags too long. Samples that I have seen are disgusting - You remember Green Harmony's "dog doo brown", smelled horrible and had almost NO effects. It was like Ryan/ Green Harmony was trying for mainly the color.. They produced low quality kratom.

Bake cookies, Leave your cookies in the oven TOO long... they burn & turn black. So.. what happens when Indo's burn the leaf? They sell it anyway  . They try to blend it or whatever, call it Black Bali, lol.. I think they need to watch those bags very carefully.

Chocolate? There IS a legit Chocolate Bent, there have been some good ones... seems obvious that's a well done Bent, mixed with a light Indoor dried white or green, to produce the lighter brown shade?

agree, browns and darker (blackish) all either too burnt to enjoy or resin mixed in and wreck my tolerance. I won't do much anything darker than a reddish bent. Except café coffee blends or chocolate blends.

I bought a Bentaungie from a vendor labeled as "Dark Side Bent". It is an ungodly dark color, could be called black and no one would argue. It has a bizarre burnt taste, much more pronounced than the typical bent taste that to me is kinda sweet. Never got much out of it, and haven't thought about it till now. Still have probably 60g left.

Are they toasting some of these darker varieties? I know some Indo suppliers use "ovens" to cure/dry their leaf. I really think this particular "bent" is just burnt leaf. The vendor never restocked it, so I'm assuming it wasn't a hit.

A while back (pre-Summer 2018) it seemed that if you bought a “red” from any vendor, it was a little (or a lot) fermented. So all of those brownish or red-ish strains were what I considered “Bents”. 2018 seemed to be the shift to “Green” Reds. Mystic’s Vampire, SoCal’s Red Bali, etc.
So any “Red” that isn’t Green in color, to me is a “Bent”. And I’ve had some that were FIRE!

This is one that can't be easily answered because there is no industry standard definition of what constitutes a bentuangie. I think the most commonly accepted definition of a traditional Bentunagie has gone through a heavier fermentation process turning it the traditiional dark/brown color. Gold/Yellow come from a partial fermentation - most people do not consider these to be "Bentuangie".

There are many ways to produce a bent/yellow/gold powder and they are NOT all equal. A bent/yellow/gold is actually the most technically challenging batch to produce correctly, and IMO great bent batches are produced out of sheer luck with most producers (there are few people who have mastered the process, but many, many people producing it). Even those who have honed their craft cannot always nail it - its a delicate dance of controlling the environment at play (mainly time and temperature).

Fermentation can be achieved in many ways, but the easiest and most common methods involve putting wet leaves in a clear bag in the sun or stacking up a pile of wet leaves and introducing a mild heat if needed . As common sense will tell you, these methods do not allows for very much control over the temperatures during this process. As a result, they may need to keep the leaves in the bags, etc.. longer than what is ideal, which further degrades the quality (remember time + temperature are two important factors in getting it right). All of this is not the most pleasant thing to think about - ESPECIALLY if they are not washing the leaves after the fermentation (one should not automatically assume they are).

Some aspects of kratom production are like crafting a fine wine and that is especially true with more technical batches like bentuangie (okay that is a little dramatic... but you get what I mean). The quality measures a producer puts in place makes all the world of difference in the final product. At a high level, these measures can be broken down into two categories - 1. Pre-harvest tree care/manipulations & 2. Post-harvest production techniques. If a producer wishes to and/or has the right balance of external motivations and possesses the knowledge to do so, these are skills that can be honed over time.

So far, every "Bent" I have encountered (red OR green) have identified themselves as a "Bent" or "Bentuagnie." And, so far, every single one has been the standard green color - except for K-OG's "Bentuangie," which is reddish/rust colored.

I have to chalk it up to my inexperience that I haven't been able to appreciate any differences between a bent and a a typical red (or green).

A "bent", as a special fermented leaf, is just such a wonderful and delicious idea; but I don't know if it's all just hype. I find myself wishing that I lived in the tropics with my own grove of kratom trees that I could experiment with endlessly....... ;) .

7ohm has a fantastic Green Bent I got last month... it's actually kind of stimulating, a solid mid-spec with very good pain relief and mood lift. It's a darker green color with a mild amount of the bent fermentation taste. He's also got a wild red bent that I haven't had for a couple of years but back then it was pretty great, definitely reddish in color and more on the sleepy side like most of the typical bents I've had.

I've heard from several others here that Benni has a selection of some outstanding Bents but haven't tried any from him yet.

I got a few samples of your reds and they are very different colors - for instance, the red Hilir is green while the red Aceh is rust-colored. Migjt there be some fermentation going on with these?

A bent can actually turn black while making it if you leave the leaves in a certain step of the process too long. When you recently heard some folks selling "Black MD" or "Black Bali" I suspect that this is what they were doing.

We have been out of that rustic bent for awhile but I found two 100g bags in the "hold bin" that somebody never claimed. I'm not a big bent person, but our chocolate bent hits the spot for me!
